10 Best Webtoons, According To The App | CBR

Webtoon is both a mobile app and website that hosts a wide variety of webcomics in a down scrolling format to fit your phone. Webtoon comics range from romance to action to sci-fi and drama. Many of the toons have become super popular, gaining their own anime series (Tower of God), Korean dramas (Cheese in the Trap), and Webtoon’s top-rated toon (Lore Olympus) may even be getting an animated series developed by the Jim Henson company soon.

The scrolling through pages allows for more dynamic reading: surprises in dramas, jumpscares for horror, and those big beautiful panels that make readers “aw” aloud in romances. Artists behind the toons sometimes also make them even more compelling by adding music and gifs to really make the Webtoon feel alive. Hopefully, this list will provide new readers with a bit of direction. Here are the current top-rated Webtoons, based on the app.

10 LUMINE

This fantasy story features a boy, Lumine, who also happens to be a runaway werewolf. Lumine is a young, clumsy, and extremely well-natured boy (and pup) who constantly seems to get himself into rough situations.

After getting cornered by a pickpocketer, Lumine tries to help a young witch boy he’s just met named Kody. Lumine transforms into a werewolf to fend of the pickpocketer, only to change into a small pup. After being rescued by Kody’s dad, Lumine is taken in by this family and is given the job of being Kody’s bodyguard.

8 Castle Swimmer

The kingdom of sharks once killed a demigod and since have been cursed to be injured and scarred, unlike the ferocious sea creatures they are based on. 7 Midnight Poppy Land

Midnight Poppy Land is another romance Webtoon and is actually fairly new to its roster. With only about 25 episodes, this Webtoon has been ranked as the seventh-best comic right now. Midnight Poppy Land fills the need of “tall, dark, and handsome” meets “clumsy and cute.” It is no wonder this Webtoon has moved so high up the ranks in such little time.

6 I Love Yoo

I Love Yoo was the top-rated Webtoon for what felt like forever before the artist took a much-needed hiatus. This Webtoon was once labeled as a romance but recently has changed to a drama. It follows Shin-Ae, a girl with an extremely difficult life. She’s a bit odd and rough around the edges and finds the genuine act of making friends incredibly difficult. But the moment she meets a strange set of brothers, everything changes. Kousuke and Yeong-Gi are polar opposites, but their effect on Shin-Ae is both a bit much and extremely needed. While the romance is subtle, this story is deep and gets better and better with each chapter.

5 True Beauty

This Webtoon is a take on Korean beauty standards. True horror fan, Jugyeong, is an utterly average teenage girl. She’s pimply, doesn’t have double eyelids, and just doesn’t see the beauty within herself. That is until she binge-watches a ton of makeup tutorials and tests it on herself. Now the issue is letting anyone besides her immediate family see her without makeup.

Like I Love Yoo, True Beauty was once labeled as a drama and completely read as a Korean drama show. But recently, the love triangle has gotten a bit heavier in the plot and the comic’s genre was changed to romance.

4 SubZero

The two dragon kingdoms Azure and Crimson have been at war with one another for years, and the royal bloodline from these families has the ability to change into dragons. They decide they will arrange a marriage between their children, Clove the last princess of the Azure dragons, and Kyro, the crown prince of the Crimson clan.

3 Let’s Play

Let’s Play has been a fan-favorite Webtoon for awhile. It’s a romance Webtoon about an indie game developer, Sam, trying to find love, both within herself and those around her. This Webtoon is perfect for gamers with references all over. It begins with Sam’s first game, Ruminate, being totally destroyed by a let’s play “ViewTuber” named Marshall Law, who Sam typically really looks up to. Marshall has a huge following so his fans immediately jump on a wild bandwagon of giving Ruminate poor ratings. Sam’s day couldn’t be going any worse. That is until she finds out Marshall just so happens to be her new next-door neighbor.

2 unOrdinary

unOridnary is an ongoing series under the superhero genre of Webtoon and has been one of the most consistently popular toons on the app, always within the top 5 of Most Popular in All Genre.

Everyone in John’s school for the elite has superpowers, its the norm of the unOrdinary world. Everyone, except John. They call those with the lack of power cripples, and they are expected to keep a low profile. Think Gossip Girl meets My Hero Academia, the rich and elite (with a disdain for the lower class) but they’re also students with superpowers. It’s up to John to survive his classmates while also hiding a secret of his own.

1 Lore Olympus

Sometime during the I Love Yoo hiatus, Lore Olympus and its popularity rose to the top and has been undefeated ever since. This Webtoon is a retelling of the classic Greek mythology of Hades and Persephone. It’s their love story from the moment they first meet, and features a wide range of gods and goddesses. Lore Olympus tackles a ton of modern-day issues and is so wonderfully drawn. Each character is extremely unique both in appearance and personality. The romance is also so genuine and wholesome, fans can’t help but love it.
