The world of comic books is filled to the brim with a wide variety of villains and threats for the heroes to face down and protect the world and universe from. Between humans seeking world domination to alien invaders and metahuman threats, the world is a dangerous place.
Yet the most dangerous of all may be the villains who embody one of the most notoriously evil beings in the universe, demons. Many villains have taken on demonic powers or demonic forms over the years. Let’s take a look at the ten villains who are truly the most powerful with their own demonic origins.
10 Demons Three
One of the first foes that the heroes of DC Comics face from the demon realm is the brothers known as the Demons Three. These beings once ruled the galaxy a billion years ago before the Timeless Ones banished them from our realm. Known by their names Abnegazar, Rath, and Ghast, the brothers have become powerful foes in the universe.
They are often summoned to Earth by villains like Felix Faust, who seek to use their powers to create chaos on the planet. They have worked with Neron, the Secret Society of Super Villains, and others over the years.
9 Anton Arcane
The next foe that has a demonic twist is Anton Arcane, the foe of legendary DC Comics creature/hero Swamp Thing. A scientist and magician obsessed with immortality, he has often tried to take the power of Swamp Thing for himself and has brought others back from the dead as well.
Anton would eventually lose his life a multitude of times, before finally being sent to Hell for his crimes. After years of service in the Hell dimension, Anton was promoted and became a demon, taking his newfound power to Earth.
One thing Marvel fans have learned over the years is that not all demons are from the same dimension. In fact, many demonic foes are from various dimensions across the multiverse. One such demonic force of nature is the powerful villain Dormammu.
A powerful foe of the Ancient One and Doctor Strange, he uses his servant Baron Mordo on Earth to cause chaos and find loopholes in his deal with Strange to conquer Earth. He is one of the ancient beings of the universe.
One powerful demon of mutant origins is the father of the X-Men’s Nightcrawler, Azazel. The leader of a group of evil-looking demons banished from Earth by xenophobic angel-like beings during Biblical times, Azazel’s power of teleportation allows him to move back and forth between Earth and his dimension.
He cements his power and ability to travel to Earth by having children all around the world, sharing a link with all of them. This includes Nightcrawler, a child conceived between Azazel and Mystique.
One interesting demonic entity in the world of Marvel Comics is the creature known as Blackheart, the son of Mephisto. Born from the accumulated evil of the town of Christ’s Crown, New York, Mephisto created this being and trained him in the ways of evil.
After failing to corrupt Spider-Man, Daredevil, and other heroes, he surmises that good will always beat evil due to humanity’s strength, and for this Mephisto banishes Blackheart to Earth. As predicted by his father, using his demonic powers drives Blackheart to madness, and leads to years of clashes with his father and others on Earth.
One of DC Comics’ most powerful demonic villains is none other than Neron, one of the lords of hell. Claiming to be one of the first beings to have walked the universe, he made his biggest impact during the Underworld Unleashed storyline, in which he gave his demonic power to several villains in exchange for their souls in an attempt to take over Earth.
It took the combined might of the heroes of Earth to stop the foe. He has made appearances over the years and is often depicted as one of the most powerful beings in the universe.
One powerful being that has terrorized the Marvel Universe over the years is a creature known as the Demogoblin. An ancient being banished centuries ago, the Hobgoblin had this creature bound to him in an effort to gain more power by making a deal with a demon, creating the creature.
After infecting Moon Knight with a demonic virus the creature battled John Blaze and Ghost Rider, ultimately being defeated and expelled by the Hobgoblin. Separated from his host, the creature grew and gained more power.
This unique character is special, in that they technically are of the species known as a fallen angel and have gone back and forth between anti-hero and villain. Yet their notoriety is so well known it was hard not to include here. That character is Lucifer himself of DC Comics/Vertigo.
The fallen angel is still technically the Lord of Hell, and despite being a fallen angel has been known to take demonic forms in his appearances. He is one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe and challenges the concept of predestination while struggling with true morality.
The most powerful demonic figure in Marvel Comics is none other than Mephisto, the Demon Lord behind some of the company’s best stories and characters. Responsible for things like the creation of the Ghost Riders and more recently turning Las Vegas into a part of his hellish empire, Mephisto is a powerful, deal-making villain at odds with the heroes of the Marvel Universe.
Battling heroes like Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Blade, and other supernatural heroes, Mephisto has even fought the forces of the Avengers. He is one of the original cosmic and hellish beings of the universe.
The most powerful demonic villain of the DC Comics universe is none other than Raven’s father, Trigon. Ranked amongst the most powerful villains of the DC Universe alongside Darkseid, The Anti-Monitor, and many others, the villain has been known to enslave worlds and use his children to take over those worlds.
He has attempted to take over Earth several times using his daughter Raven and is a constant foe of the Teen Titans and Justice League. He also inspired a cult led by Brother Blood even after his defeat.
