5 Marvel Heroes Who Would Make Great SHIELD Directors (& 5 Who Would Be Terrible)

SHIELD is the premiere spy organization in comics. Like all great Silver Age Marvel concepts, it was created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee in 1965. The group has become a mainstay not just of Marvel comics, but also the MCU. Every other comic spy organization wishes it was SHIELD. It’s so iconic, that DC has multiple groups that all try to be just like it and guess what- none of them are as cool.

While SHIELD has been run by Nick Fury for most of its existence, it has had other directors as well, including superheroes like Iron Man (who did a terrible job) and Steve Rogers (who did a pretty good job). This list is going to look at how well some other Marvel heroes would do as director of SHIELD.

10 Terrible Director: Spider-Man

Spider-Man is one of the best heroes out there. Having learned the hard way that with great power comes great responsibility, Spider-Man protects the people of New York City from crime of all sorts and helps save the world with his friends in the Avengers. He’s also a genius, which definitely helps matters.

As good of a hero as Spider-Man is and as smart as he is, the director of SHIELD would be a horrible fit for the Wall-Crawler. He just doesn’t have it in him to make the kind of decisions he’d have to make and doesn’t have a black ops sensibility.

9 Great Director: Cable

Cable has been through a lot in his life. The son of Cyclops and Jean Grey clone Madelyne Pryor, he was sent to the future to save him from a techno-organic virus and came back to the present to stop Apocalypse from taking over the future. One of the best soldiers in the Marvel Universe, Cable has what it takes to be the director of SHIELD.

Cable has worked lots of black ops missions and knows what it takes to make them work. He has a keen tactical mind and would have no problem making the kind of decisions that the director of SHIELD has to make on a daily basis.

8 Terrible Director: Deadpool

The Merc With A Mouth, Deadpool has gone from a one-dimensional assassin to one of the most popular Marvel characters of the last twenty years. His tendency for fourth-wall-breaking humor and hilarious ultra-violence has served him well on-page and screen.  Deadpool would make a terrible director of SHIELD.

He just doesn’t have the mentality to run SHIELD. Sure, he knows black ops and can be serious when he needs to be, but he just doesn’t have the right kind of brain for the job. He’s a good grunt, but not a good leader.

7 Great Director: Domino

Domino worked with Cable for years as a member of his black ops group the Six Pack and with X-Force. Her mutants powers give her uncanny luck- bullets fired at her miss, knives break, punches don’t hit her. Even without these powers, she is a deadly combatant, well versed in all kinds of weapons.

Domino has been in the black ops game for a long time and knows what it takes. She can make the tough choices and with her luck ability, would be, well, lucky enough to make the right choices.

6 Terrible Director: Quicksilver

One of the fastest men on Earth, Quicksilver used to be a mutant and the son of Magneto before Disney decided that he was no longer a mutant because of marketing rights. However, what didn’t change was his superspeed powers or his attitude, which can be characterized as bad.

Quicksilver thinks quickly because of his powers, but he’s also too impulsive and impatient to be the director of anything, let alone a superspy organization whose job it is to protect the world from the biggest threats.

5 Great Director: Mystique

Calling Mystique a hero is a bit of a stretch, but the shapeshifting mutant has been known to do the right thing as a member of both X-Factor and the X-Men and has experience doing government work when she was the leader of the Freedom Force. Right now, she’s part of the ruling council of Krakoa and can nominally be considered a hero because of her alliance with the X-Men.

Mystique would be perfect as director of SHIELD. She’s been working black ops for years and knows her way around spy operations of all kinds. She could put this experience into great practice as director of SHIELD.

4 Terrible Director: Thor

Thor is the God of Thunder and the only member of Marvel’s Big Three who hasn’t been a director of SHIELD. Right now, he serves Galactus as the herald for the Devourer of Worlds and wields the might of the Power Cosmic as well as the power of Mjolnir. He’s a mighty warrior that would be completely horrible as director of SHIELD.

Thor is a great person to go to if one needs a powerful threat taken care of or even help fighting a war between superhuman opponents. However, putting him in charge of a spy organization would be foolish in the extreme. What’s the old saying- “When you only have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail”? Well, that describes Thor as director of SHIELD.

3 Great Director: Black Widow

Black Widow has worked pretty much every black ops job imaginable. She’s spied, assassinated, and infiltrated. On top of that, she’s been a member of multiple super teams, as well as the leader of the Avengers for a time. She’s also worked for SHIELD, meaning she knows something about the organization.

It’s kind of strange that Black Widow has never been considered for a directorship in SHIELD. She’s way more qualified than Iron Man was when he was made director and while Cap did a great job while at SHIELD, he’s not really one for the bloodier side of black ops. Black Widow would have no problem with any of it and do a great job as director.

2 Terrible Director: Punisher

Frank Castle was a Marine turned cop who lost his family to a mob hit. This tragedy drove him to a life of violent vigilantism as the Punisher. He used his military honed skills to fight a one-man war on crime. Technically a serial killer, Punisher has killed thousands of people.

Punisher is a good soldier but a bad leader. Even though he has military experience, he doesn’t really have much experience with some of the more shadowy aspects of spycraft. Castle’s solution to most problems is force and that doesn’t always work in the world of black ops.

1 Great Director: Wolverine

Wolverine is the best there is at what he does… and what he does is join superteams. He’s also no slouch when it comes to all kinds of black ops, having been a spy, an assassin, and a soldier. He’s lead the mutant black ops squad of X-Force, is a current member of the team (dubbed the “mutant CIA” by the Krakoan government), and has run the Jean Grey School For Gifted Youngsters.

Wolverine would make an amazing director of SHIELD. He’s worked with the organization before and has decades of experience with the type of work SHIELD does. He can make the tough choices and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty, just like his old friend, Nick Fury.
