Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff, is a longtime Avenger, a founding member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, sister to Quicksilver, and daughter of Magneto. Her mutant powers grant her natural access to magical hex powers that have been a great boon to her and her team. Those powers grew over the years until she gained the ability to bend reality to her will.
Magik was a longtime member of the New Mutants and eventually graduated to be a member of the X-Men. She can easily teleport herself and her teammates across vast distances, has a proficiency in sorcery, can control the demonic realm of Limbo, and is armed with her powerful Soulsword.
10 SCARLET WITCH: Reality Control
The first and most obvious argument for Scarlet Witch’s superiority over Magik is Wanda’s ability to warp reality to her will. While all sorcery is manipulating the fabric of reality to some degree, Scarlet Witch has proven herself able to do it on a vast scale with exact precision when she wants to. Magik can only exert such influence in the realm of Limbo.
9 MAGIK: Power Over Limbo
That said, Magik does have total control over an entire underworld realm, and that’s nothing to sneeze at. Illyana has dominance over the realm of Limbo in its entirety, and she can even summon and control demons from the realm. While it does seem to rebel against her at times, these are rare. Magik has been able to control Limbo well enough that the X-Men spent some time with Limbo as their headquarters, and they held Black Bolt in Limbo during the X-Men’s war with the Inhumans.
8 SCARLET WITCH: Daughter Of Magneto
Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are the offspring of the immensely powerful Magneto, so that element runs through Wanda’s blood. While she possesses none of his powers, his X-Gene is within her. Both she and Magneto are Omega-Level mutants, and Scarlet Witch has earned this ranking on several occasions.
It was implied in Axis that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch aren’t actually Magneto’s offspring, but that hasn’t been proven to a significant degree yet.
7 MAGIK: Soulsword
Magik is armed with the powerful Soulsword she forged in Limbo, and the weapon has exhibited extraordinary abilities. It is literally made out of Illyana’s magics, and she can even cast spells through it. It harms paranormal and ethereal beings, and it can even block spells used by other magic-users.
6 SCARLET WITCH: Age And Experience
Scarlet Witch has been active a lot longer than Magik has, and that has granted her a great measure of maturity and skill over Illyana. She grew up under the care of the High Evolutionary, she first broke onto the scene as a founding member of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. She joined up with the Avengers shortly after and was a part of “Captain America‘s Kooky Quartet” with Cap, Quicksilver, and Hawkeye. All of this happened before Magik ever appeared on the scene and gave Wanda a good headstart.
5 MAGIK: Better Control Over Her Abilities
Despite this, Magik seems to have a better handle on her abilities than Wanda. Illyana spent a long time in Limbo mastering her abilities, and she knows her limits but continues to expand them. Meanwhile, Scarlet Witch’s powers grew far beyond her control, and her sanity frayed as a consequence. While she has exhibited the ability to bend reality to her will, she hasn’t done this in some time. It seems that she’s had to scale down her magic so that she can keep them under her command.
4 SCARLET WITCH: Darkchylde
That said, Illyana does have a dark side. Darkchylde is a demonic form that Magik has had to keep at bay in the past. She now seems to have garnered control over the Darkchylde, but that could change should the demon Belasco ever make another run at taking Magik’s soul. The Darkchylde has wreaked grand havoc upon the X-Men and the New Mutants in the past. Shortly before the beginning of House of X and Powers of X, Illyana seemed to lose control over herself once again and transformed into a gigantic demon which Cyclops‘ X-Men team had to banish.
3 MAGIK: Phoenix Five
Magik was one of the five X-Men who became a vessel for the Phoenix Force during Avengers Vs. X-Men. During this time, she and the other members of the Phoenix Five were able to make vast and swift changes to the Earth.
They tried to make it into a mutant paradise, but the Phoenix Force made each one crave more power. While Illyana no longer has access to such power, she could again if the Phoenix once again chooses her as a vessel.
2 SCARLET WITCH: House Of M And M-Day
It does bear mentioning that Scarlet Witch did once change the entire world on the request of her brother, Quicksilver. Wanda made it so that mutants were the dominant species on Earth, and they were ruled by their king, Magneto. Wanda and Pietro enjoyed their place as part of the royal family, but the Avengers, X-Men, and other heroes began to remember the world as it should be. This ended with House of M being overthrown, but Wanda, in a rage, made the infamous, “No more mutants,” statement. This took the powers away from thousands of mutants and made it so that no mutant child would be born again for years.
1 MAGIK: Future Sorcerer Supreme
In Doctor Strange: The End, a tale which told of the final adventure of Doctor Strange, we are shown the next possible Sorcerer Supreme once Stephen’s tenure is up. While Stephen is the last living sorcerer, he goes to reignite the flame of magic high up in the mountains–a task which takes his life. However, it keeps magic alive, and it resurrects Illyana Rasputin to become the next Sorcerer Supreme. This says something about Magik’s sorcerous potential and that she may have an even grander destiny in front of her.
Is Scarlet Witch more powerful than Magik in the comics? There are some reasons she definitely is — and some Magik might win out.
