In a recent Twitter thread, Heiret wrote, “If you’ve played the game, you’re tired of the sea bass joke. I get it. *I’M* tired of the sea bass joke, and I wrote it.” He then explained the joke’s origin.
“It was originally ‘I caught a sea bass! Well…maybe a C- bass…)’,” he said. However, the writers realized that players were going to see some jokes more than others with more commonly caught creatures, as well as some disappointment in catching the same thing. As a result, they decided that “maybe it would be better to spin it positive. Make it a C+ instead.” Heiret explains that it’s the same joke, but the C+ alters the way that players perceive the catch.
Though fans and Heiret are over the joke’s constant appearance, he is very proud of the efforts he and his team have made to ensure the game is “the most positive, comforting, and funny.”
The newest game in the Animal Crossing franchise, New Horizons has been crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic. It allows players to shape their world and connect with one another despite social distancing. This freedom is what Heiret calls “the secret sauce to this game.”
Even Rob Heiret, who wrote the sea bass joke for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, is tired of seeing it — but he's happy to explain how it came about.
