With the production of the Avatar sequels back on, a behind-the-scenes photo offers fans a peek at Oscar winner Kate Winslet and Fear of the Walking Dead‘s Cliff Curtis filming Avatar 2.
“From the set of the sequels: Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Kate Winslet, and Cliff Curtis taking a break from underwater performance capture for a quick photo!” the official Avatar Twitter posted. “Fun fact: Much of the performance capture took place in this 900,000-gallon tank, built specifically for the sequels.”
All four of the actors are decked out in various motion capture equipment, helping to bring the Navi to life in the new film. The back-to-back filming of Avatar 2 and 3 has resumed in New Zealand after the original production start was delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The sequels, along with Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series, were recently allowed to start back up.
Written and directed by James Cameron, Avatar 2 stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco, Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis. The film arrives in theaters Dec. 17, 2021, followed by Avatar 3 in Dec. 2023, Avatar 4 in Dec. 2025, and Avatar 5 in Dec. 2027.
