Back to the Future: Lea Thompson Announces Cast Charity Reunion

The cast of Back to the Future is revving up for a reunion. Lea Thompson has confirmed the stars of the sci-fi series are getting back together to raise money for charity.

Thompson has teamed up with Josh Gad’s Reunited Apart series to relive Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale’s cult franchise. Posting on YouTube, Gad and Thompson paid homage to a scene from 1985’s Back to the Future with Thompson reciting and reworking lines from her role as Lorraine Baines-McFly. The pair made references to the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, Gad’s role in The Book of Mormon and finally announced that the Back to the Future cast will appear on Reunited Apart very soon.

Gad and Thompson did not reveal which members of the cast specifically will be taking part in the charity special, however, it was hinted that Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd will potentially return as Marty McFly and the iconic Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown; Gad gave fans a hint of who was going to be part of the Reunited Apart special when he posted a screenshot of a Zoom call with Fox and Lloyd.

Back to the Future premiered in 1985 and went on to spawn a trilogy of movies, ending with Back to the Future Part III in 1990. Since then, the franchise has seen an animated series, tie-in comic books and the recent world premiere of Back to the Future the Musical. While there has been plenty of talk about a possible fourth movie or complete reboot, Zemeckis and Gale have repeatedly said it will never happen.

It is currently uncertain if Crispin Glover or Jeffrey Weissman, who played George McFly; Claudia Wells or Elisabeth Shue, who played Jennifer Parker; will be part of the line-up. Additionally, it is unknown if Biff Tannen actor Thomas F. Wilson will be part of the celebration. Although this is the first time some of the cast will have got together in years, Lloyd and Fox took part in a charity poker match in March. The Reunited Apart special comes just ahead of the 35th anniversary of Back to the Future‘s original release.

This is the second time Gad has gathered the stars of an ’80s classic. Only recently, his Goonies-themed Reunited Apart brought back Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, and Corey Feldman (among others). Gad’s Back to the Future reunion will hit his YouTube channel on Monday, May 11, with all money donated going to support Project Hope, a global health and humanitarian relief organization.

Lea Thompson is part of Josh Gad's Back to the Future special, which will reunite the cast of the 1985 movie for his Reunited Apart series.
