Netflix has won the rights to make the Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt superhero comedy Ball and Chain, based on the comic by Scott Lobdell and Alé Garza.
According to Variety, Netflix has landed the rights to the film after a competitive bidding war between various studios. Johnson and Blunt are set to executive produce alongside Lobdell, Dany and Hiram Garcia, Kevin Misher, Andy Berman. The Big Sick screenwriter Emily V. Gordon will pen the screenplay.
“Netflix is the perfect partner to deliver this epic superhero/romantic comedy experience alongside us, and we’re excited to be back in business with the Netflix team,” Johnson said. I’m also excited to not only reunite with dear friend Emily Blunt in front of the camera, but to also collaborate as producing partners as we bring Emily V. Gordon’s script to life.”
Ball and Chain is the latest collaboration between the streamer and Dwayne Johnson. Johnson’s Netflix blockbuster Red Notice is in the middle of filming. Meanwhile, Johnson had also previously committed to starring in John Henry and the Statesman for the streaming service.
In addition, Ball and Chain serves as a reunion for Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. The two actors first collaborated with Jungle Cruise, which is scheduled for release on July 30, 2021.
