Batwoman's Azrael Reveal Used a Wikipedia Entry – Including a Citation

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for “A Secret Kept From All The Rest,” the penultimate episode of Batwoman Season 1.

In this week’s recent episode of Batwoman, “A Secret Kept From All The Rest,” viewers were given a tease regarding the Arrowverse debut of the Avenging Angel, Azrael, with a translated page from the late Lucius Fox’s journal mentioning the character and detailing important parts of his mythos. However, it turns out that the text used in the journal came from a part of Wikipedia’s Batsuit article.

Twitter user MisterBatfleck posted a side-by-side comparison of the Wikipedia page and Batwoman‘s journal scene, showing the journal page to be a word-for-word copy of the section from the article, even including a citation.

In the comics, both Jean-Paul Valley and Michael Lane have taken up the Azrael identity at different points in time. The former is a superhuman ex-assassin who briefly took on the Batman identity during the Knightfall storyline after Bane broke Bruce Wayne’s back, while the latter is an ex-police officer who was empowered by the mystical Suit of Sorrows, which is mentioned in the text.

Created by Caroline Dries and developed by Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, Batwoman stars Ruby Rose, Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, Dougray Scott, Elizabeth Anweis and Nicole Kang. The series airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
