Although he joins the Armed Detective Agency, his origins are slowly shown throughout the series, with other things about him only being hinted at in certain episodes. There are still a lot of things you may not know about him. Here are ten facts you didn’t know about Atsushi Nakajima.

10 He Is A Taurus

You would think he would be a Leo because of his ability, but Atsushi is a Taurus. Although people with the Taurus zodiac sign tend to be stoic and practical, they can also be determined and ambitious.

Most of all, Atsushi has an ability that can turn the tide of battle if used correctly. Once he learns how to control his ability, Atsushi can become quite the strong trump card.

9 He Is A Natural Fighter

Atsushi may have been depicted as weak and without a backbone at the beginning of Bungo Stray Dogs, but when he receives the character development he desperately needed, his real abilities shine through.

When he gains control of the tiger and can use his ability the way he wishes, he is shown to be a natural at fighting against his foes. The more he fights against Ryuunosuke, the smarter he gets at battle strategies and thinking on his feet to avoid death.

8 His Belt Acts On His Emotions

Atsushi’s outfit may have been one of the first noticeable things when he joined the Armed Detective Agency. Atsushi has a belt that is longer than necessary, but it comes with a purpose.

Whenever he is upset, sad, or surprised, his belt acts like a tail and moves depending on his emotions. This is a trait the author put in so it is not hard to forget about his ability.

7 He Has Deep-Rooted Trauma

Atsushi was first shown contemplating whether he should jump in the river and end his life from hunger, or rob someone for money so he could buy something to eat. Although he ultimately failed at robbing someone because he was too kind, there were multiple flashbacks of a person who had constantly told Atsushi he was useless.

Because of this person, Atsushi has constant nightmares and has a weak-willed personality in the beginning of Bungo Stray Dogs. This trauma is explained further in the film Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple.

6 He Had An Adoptive Father

If Atsushi had an adoptive father, why does he live in the orphanage? It is because the orphanage director was his adoptive father. Although he mentally and physically abused Atsushi and was the cause of his nightmares and flashbacks throughout Bungo Stray Dogs, he lived in the orphanage with the other children.

Their relationship was complicated, to say the least, with Dazai acting as more of a proper father figure than Atsushi’s adoptive one.

5 He Was Created As A 24-Year-Old Man

Atsushi is an 18-year-old teenage boy right now, but Kafka Asagiri first designed Atsushi to be a 24-year-old man in Bungo Stray Dogs. While that thought may seem odd at first, especially since Atsushi and Dazai would then be even closer in age, this idea was eventually not used.

Atsushi was inspired by the real author, Atsushi Nakajima, who died at age 33 from severe asthma and pneumonia on December 4, 1942.

4 He Has A Black Streak In His Hair

Atsushi has light grey hair that does not have a speck of black of it in the anime, but in the manga and light novels, he has a prominent strand of black hair. This may have been taken out due to preference or animation issues, but it is a trait that makes him stand out in the manga.

Although he does not have a black strand of hair anymore, however, his eyes are eye-catching enough for most.

3 His Favorite Food Is Tea Over Rice

Tea over rice, or called chazuke or ochazuke in Japan, is a dish made by pouring tea over cooked rice. It can be made by using green tea, dashi, meaning fish stock, or even hot water.

When Atsushi is invited to eat for “saving” Dazai’s life in the first episode of Bungo Stray Dogs, he eats about 30 bowls of it from starving from hunger for weeks. Coincidentally, it turns out to be his favorite food as well.

2 He Has Segmental Heterochromia

It turns out Atsushi’s exotic eyes are not because he is the main character of an anime series, but that it was an actual named condition. Segmental heterochromia is when areas of the same iris are a different color.

It can be a genetic thing without it being linked to any diseases, but since he is an orphan, it cannot be linked back to his parents. This fact makes more sense when looking at other characters’ eye colors and seeing more calm colors, such as dark brown and light blue.

1 There Is A Reason Behind His Uneven Hairstyle

Atsushi was not only mentally and physically abused by the orphanage director, but bullied by the kids in the orphanage as well. In flashbacks, Atsushi had an even haircut when he was a child.

However, as his hair grew out, the kids decided to cut his hair with scissors as a prank. Atsushi has left his hair like this because he did not feel a need to fix it, but the reason behind his odd haircut is quite sad.
