Star Wars: The Clone Wars voice artist Sam Witwer has passed judgment on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, admitting that J.J. Abrams’ Episode IX isn’t this favorite entry in the epic “Skywalker Saga.”
Speaking during a Star Wars Battlefront II Twitch stream, Witwer said George Lucas’ Star Wars: A New Hope is the best of the galaxy far, far away. As the conversation turned to The Rise of Skywalker, Witwer explained, “It’s um… look, if you like it, awesome. It’s not as meaningful to me because I can’t really reconcile that mythology with George’s. But that’s just my opinion, you know?”
Although Witwer said there were “some really great moments,” he added, “My personal is take is I think a Star Wars where the moral of the story is ‘throw down your weapon, don’t hurt your family, love or fear.'” Discussing the ending as Kylo Ren and Rey took on Emperor Palpatine on Exegol, Witwer concluded, “I think that’s superior than a Star Wars where you win by melting the bad guy’s face off. That’s just my thing… I don’t know that you can do a better ending than Return of the Jedi.”
Even though Witwer hasn’t appeared in a live-action Star Wars movie, he’s provided vocals for everything from The Force Awakens to Rogue One. He also reprised his Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels role as the voice of Darth Maul for Solo: A Star Wars Story. Witwer has been part of the wide world of Star Wars since Star Wars: The Force Unleashed in 2008, meaning he’s seen plenty of video games, shows and movies come and go.
While there has been a lot of fan backlash against The Rise of Skywalker and it’s controversial ending, Witwer didn’t hold back with his own scathing review. Only recently, franchise lead Daisy Ridley admitted dealing with the movie’s negativity was “tough.” Similarly to the divisive reception of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Witwer is the latest major name to join the debate on whether Disney’s new trilogy is a masterpiece or desecration of Lucas’ Star Wars legacy.
Directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Keri Russell, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher, with Naomi Ackie and Richard E.
