WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Fruits Basket Season 2, Episode 7, “Let’s Start the Watermelon Splitting Contest!” now streaming on FUNimation and Crunchyroll.
Akito has arrived at the Sohmas’ vacation house, creating new tensions during the family’s summer vacation. This surprise arrival doesn’t put a stop to the schedule of outdoor fun Momiji’s put together for everyone, and Akito doesn’t even interact with Tohru in this episode. What the Zodiac leader’s unexpected presence and mysterious agenda puts into the spotlight in this episode are the secrets that each of Fruits Basket‘s lead characters (Yuki, Kyo, Shigure and, yes, even Tohru) are keeping from each other.
Of the main characters, Tohru is the worst at keeping secrets, while the things she feels the need to keep secret she really doesn’t need to. Oversensitivity to others and denial of her own needs continue to be her greatest flaws. Momiji’s big plan for the day, a watermelon splitting contest, brings back Tohru’s memories of her mother, which she’s about to tell the group before awkwardly stopping herself.
She stops herself because Hiro, who’s always found Tohru annoying, told her he finds it particularly annoying when she talks about her mom. Finding out Hiro’s mom is pregnant makes her realize how little she knows about the Sohmas’ mothers, and thus she feels she has to shut up about her own. The one person she feels totally at ease telling her memories to is Kyo, who is keeping his own secret about his mother: while he tells Tohru his mom died in an “accident,” he omits that this “accident” was a suicide.
If his subplot last week wasn’t enough, this week’s episode makes it more obvious than ever that Shigure is not the least bit trustworthy. Hattori, one of the few characters aware of Shigure’s motives and his dealings with Akito, is fearful for Yuki, Kyo and Tohru. He chides Shigure’s scheming and “jokes”; Shigure’s dark sense of humor clearly goes beyond inappropriate passes at people into flat-out messing with people’s lives. Shigure’s fine having Akito “stir things up,” if it means he’ll get what he “wants.”
Akito calls a meeting for all of the Zodiac members. Kyo, as the Cat, is excluded from the meeting, so Tohru hangs out with him. The meeting runs long, but she patiently waits for her other friends to return. Yuki, whose been the most visibly shaken up by Akito’s presence, meets her at the beach at night in the midst of a meteor shower.
It’s here Yuki almost tells Tohru his secret, his memories of the time they met as children which have kept him going since then. He still can’t bring himself to tell her this story, but he is able to voice just how much Tohru means to him, telling her she’s dear to him and kissing her on the forehead. After this scene, consider the Yuki vs. Kyo shipping wars fully reignited.
