A year after the controversial final season of Game of Thrones aired, star Carice van Houten shared her take on the hate Season 8 received from fans.
The Game of Thrones star chose to defend the writers and creators against the fans’ ongoing hate for the final season. Knowing some fans were going to dislike Season 8, van Houten told Insider, “The fact that some people were so disappointed is because everything before that was so good.”
“So it feels a bit ungrateful. You’ve had such great times and then yeah, you’re going to be disappointed because it’s not going to go exactly how you anticipated,” she continued. “Of course, you’re going to have all sorts of criticisms and I just thought it was a sign of how good the show was.”
The final season of the HBO fantasy drama proved to be controversial, as fans and critics expressed their dissatisfaction with everything from the episodes’ production quality, editing mistakes and character’s storylines and development. Despite the controversy, Season 8 scored a record 32 Emmy nominations with a win for Oustanding Drama Series.
van Houten went on to clarify how trolling and hatred toward the creators and writers went to the extreme. “That’s beyond fandom. That’s extremism. That’s scary,” van Houten explained. “Knowing the writers and knowing how f—–g great they are, they don’t deserve that.”
She reminded watchers of the show that everyone involved is still human at the end of the day. “I think they are probably cool enough to deal with that but still, they are human beings, they are trying to make a good product,” she said
Game of Thrones stars Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams and Kit Harington.
