Great Comic Book Detectives: The Tragic Horror of the Toad! | CBR

This is the Great Comic Book Detectives, where readers send in requests for the names of comic books that they remembered reading years ago and I try to find them for them! Send any future requests to!

Reader Jamie C. wrote in to ask:

I’m very interested in tracking down a story I read about 30 years ago. It was a black and white story and I believe it was in an anthology comic like Creepy or something like that.

The main character is a weird little giy that lives in the swamp and visits a local village every once in a while. He is small and wears a hooded cloak. When he comes to the village he’s always bullied by the children. I recall them calling him something like Mr Toady or Mr Froggy.

A group of children secretly follow him home to his home in the swamp. They break into his house and discover he’s a toymaker. They trash the place and are chased away by the main character. One of the boys falls into the swamp but is saved by the guy, and his face is revealed and he actually does look like a toad creature. And sadly, he’s then shot and killed by the townsfolk.

I’m hoping you might be able to track the comic book down for me.

Sure thing, Jamie. I can see why this one would be tricky, as while it appears like a Warren publication, it is not.

No, “The Toad” is a story written and drawn by Tom Sutton that appeared in the final issue of Marvel’s black and white non-Code approved magazine series, Dracula Lives, in 1975.

Otherwise, Jamie described the issue well.

A guy named Urlik Marsh who constantly keeps a hood over his head and coverings over his legs lives on the outskirts of town and everyone tells stories of what he looks like under that hood…

When he goes to town (where he makes money by selling rare insects that he collects in the swamp), some kids in town decide to check out his cabin while he’s away…

They’re shocked by how beautiful his cabin is, with paintings and a fiddle. They’re so put off that they decide to trash his home…

He comes home and he is so shocked that he decides to chase them in a rage…

One of the kids gets trapped in quicksand. His friends leave him, and Urlik decides to save him, revealing that he really IS a monstrous-looking guy…

And, of course, he is then shot and killed by townsfolk who believe that he is a monster trying to kill a boy…

Dang, that’s some dark stuff. Good work by the late, great Tom Sutton.

There ya go, Jamie!

Okay, that’s it for this installment of the Great Comic Book Detectives! If anyone else has a story that they’d like me to track down, drop me a line at!

Readers write in about comics they remember reading as kids and CSBG finds them! Today, the tragic horror of The Toad!
