Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn Fought to Cast Bautista as Drax

Despite Bautista’s fan-favorite portrayal of Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Drax, not everyone was on board for his initial casting.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was recently asked on Twitter if the studio was okay with Bautista’s casting. “I had to fight for him – and it was the most worthy fight I’ve ever fought,” Gunn replied. “Love and miss you Dave Bautista.”

Bautista appeared as Drax the Destroyer in both 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He would later reprise the role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Other films that feature appearances by Bautista include 2017’s Blade Runner 2049, 2018’s Hotel Artemis and 2019’s Stuber. He is also set to appear upcoming adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.

Gunn has said that he won’t begin work on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 until the completion of The Suicide Squad, which he is also writing and directing. Bautista will likely reprise his role as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, though an official cast hasn’t been announced yet.

Director James Gunn revealed that it took some convincing for the studio to allow Bautista's casting as Drax.
