Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn revealed that Mantis will not be able to restore Gamora’s memory.
As Gunn prepared for a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 watch party on social media, a Twitter user asked if Mantis would be able to reinstate Gamora’s memories in the next GotG installment.
“Starting early?” Gunn wrote on Twitter. “We SEE them work in reverse when she fills Gamora with fear. But memories are thoughts, not emotions. She cannot read or send thoughts, only emotions.”
One of the story points of Avenger: Endgame was Gamora’s return after her death in Avengers: Infinity War. The only hang-up was that this was a Gamora from a past timeline before she joined the Guardians. That means that she has no recollection of her future incarnations adventures from Guardians of the Galaxy or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, including her romantic relationship with Star-Lord
Some fans were hoping that Mantis could somehow “restore” Gamora’s memories so her relationships within the crew could resume as if nothing happened. However, Gunn has put that theory to rest, meaning the Guardians will have to earn Gamora’s trust the old-fashioned way.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 currently has no release date. The film is expected to begin production in February 2021.
