the Guardians of the Galaxy films are known for their humorous edge, in part, to Dave Bautista’s portrayal of Drax the Destroyer. Now, Gunn has revealed how Bautista was able to pull off the humor so well.
Gunn commented on a recent article from Comicbook.com, which reported on how Bautista spoke about struggles playing the character. “Drax isn’t funny because Dave Bautista is ‘being funny’ – he’s funny because Dave plays the character honestly, expertly, & with heart,” Gunn said. “As over-the-top as Drax can sometimes be, Dave’s groundedness allows us to love him & laugh with him.”
Gunn and Bautista have always seemed to have a tight relationship as Bautista was one of Gunn’s biggest supporters following the director’s firing after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Bautista first played Drax in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and would reprise his role in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Additionally, it is highly likely that Bautista will reappear as Drax in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Gunn recently spoke on having to convince the studio to cast Bautista as Drax, saying, “it was the most worthy fight I’ve ever fought.” Meanwhile, Gunn and Bautista have both expressed interest in doing a film completely centering on Drax and Pom Klementieff’s Mantis.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 currently has no release date. The film is expected to begin production in February 2021.
