After years of working on sci-fi noir graphic novel Cosmic Detective in secrecy, Matt Kindt, Jeff Lemire and David Rubín launched a Kickstarter campaign for the book on May 4, which raised doubled its goal in the first 24 hours. It’s the first creator-owned collaboration between Kindt and Lemire, a book written specifically for Rubín’s art — which is jam-packed with color and life.
Cosmic Detective follows a seemingly normal private eye with a secret life working for an underground organization boasting a tenuous alliance with cosmic figures. Last night, someone murdered a god — and if this detective can’t solve the case, the world will tear itself into a million pieces. Then again, even if he does solve it, that might happen anyway.
The Kickstarter special edition of Cosmic Detective features exclusive art for backers, including playing cards and a special edition cover by Rubín.
“With the cover of the Cosmic Detective Kickstarter special edition, I’m trying to bring the vibe of the interiors of the book to the readers, which is chock full of action, mystery and bizarre situations,” Rubín told CBR. “I’m trying to capture the mood of the pulp novels covers, but in a modern way, without nostalgia. Every single page of Cosmic Detective is a new surprise for me as an artist, and I hope that it feels the same to the readers when they have the book on their hands!”
CBR has your first look at Rubín’s process for creating the Cosmic Detective Kickstarter cover, below. The campaign ends Wednesday, June 3 at 12 p.m. ET.
