Although it was already confirmed Florence Pugh would reprise her Black Widow role as Yelena Belova for the Hawkeye series, details have since been emerged revealing more about how she will potentially factor into the show.
Black Widow‘s post-credits scene shows Yelena visiting Natasha Romanoff’s grave when she encounters Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who assigns Clint Barton as Yelena’s next target after telling her Clint was responsible for Natasha’s death. This set the stage for Yelena’s role on the Hawkeye series, which The Cosmic Circus reported will span multiple episodes.
However, after emphasizing the Hawkeye series will run six episodes and not eight as some outlets reported, the site cautioned Yelena will not show up in every episode. What’s more, The Cosmic Circus cited a tweet from Charles Murphy of Murphy’s Multiverse stating that Julia Louis-Dreyfus has yet to film any scenes as Contessa for the Hawkeye series. For that reason, Contessa isn’t expected to make more than a cameo or a credits scene appearance.
It’s also speculated the Hawkeye series will reveal more about what happened to Yelena in the years between Black Widow and her return on the show. Recently, during an official Black Widow watch party on Twitter, Marvel Studios President and Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige assured that fans would eventually find out if Yelena was “dusted” by Thanos or not. The Cosmic Circus indicated there’s a fair chance the Hawkeye series will answer this question, possibly with a scene that resembles the sequence on WandaVision where Monica Rambeau returns to life following The Blip.
Many critics heralded Yelena as Black Widow‘s standout in their reviews, with praise going to Pugh’s performance as the former Red Room assassin. She’s one of the many characters debuting in Phase 4 that fans believe will serve as the MCU’s torch-bearers moving forward, along with Kamala Khan on the Ms. Marvel series and Kate Bishop from the Hawkeye show.
Created by Jonathan Igla, the Hawkeye series appears to be headed for a Fall 2021 premiere date on Disney+. Jeremy Renner is reprising his role as Clint Barton for the show, with Hailee Steinfeld playing Kate Bishop.
