WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 2 of The Last Kids on Earth, now streaming on Netflix.
Netflix’s The Last Kids on Earth ends on a scary note because while the kids and alien refugees in Wakefield have united to protect the planet, the cosmic villain Rezzoch is still hellbent on invading. Thrull, her disciple, may have been foiled, but Rezzoch seems strong enough to open the portal herself and finish the job by the time the credits roll.
With that in mind, let’s look at how a third season is set up, expanding on the intergalactic war Max Brallier’s stories detailed for young readers.
A third season is poised to dive into Rezzoch finally arriving on Earth as it seems she has just about enough power to open a rift. Season 2 concludes with her rising up through the roots of the Tree of Entry, so it appears Rezzoch has found a way out of her cosmic prison thanks to Thrull and the zombies absorbing her essence.
It’ll be interesting if she has even more acolytes like Thrull, as well as new creatures in her army for the Wakefield resistance to battle. It’s also unclear if she had any other spies besides Thrull, but given Rezzoch’s power, she might not need their help. Still, with the Beastiary in hand, she knows Jack can harness the monsters’ energy to send her back or worse yet, kill her, paving the way for an epic rivalry.
With the kids finally becoming battle-ready, Season 3 can focus on the group training with the monsters. Thrull taught Jack in Season 2, but it’s obvious that the other monsters like Bardle and Skaelka are skilled warriors so they could help the teens evolve. Likewise, the kids know a lot about monster hunting, zombie traps and Earth’s ways in general, so they could teach the aliens a thing or two as well.
They might even discover new allies, whether it be humans or aliens, and more space relics in the upcoming season. Conversely, the alliance could be torn apart with the arrival of evil humans, maybe the military hunting extraterrestrials (as parents were taken away for safety by the government during raids), or by new alien enemies. The latter doesn’t even have to be loyal to Rezzoch, as it’s still a mystery as to who came through the breach in the first place.
The Nightmare King is the entity in the third book that’s responsible for Jack’s harrowing visions. Quite a few of these nightmares were seen in Season 2 with Jack hallucinating other monsters, his friends’ death and the apocalypse coming hard and fast. The Nightmare King was responsible for this, wanting to use Jack as an avatar, so Season 3 could look at how this corruption occurs.
Thrull also dipped the boy into Rezzoch’s dimension so he could be linked to her as well, adding another dynamic to the mix. It’s possible that Rezzoch jostling to control Jack and going head to head with the Nightmare King is a pivotal part of the next entry in the series.
The Last Kids on Earth Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix. It stars Mark Hamill, Rosario Dawson, Catherine O’Hara, Keith David, Bruce Campbell, Garland Whitt, Montse Hernandez, Charles Demers and Nick Wolfhard.
