Fans saw Gamora murdered by Thanos during the events of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, with a past version of the Guardians of the Galaxy character appearing in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Now, James Gunn has revealed he played a part in this arc.
During a Quarantine Watch Party of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn was asked, “How did you learn about Gamora’s fate? Was that a decision you were a part of?” to which he replied, “Yes we talked about it a lot.”
While Gamora is convinced by Nebula to fight against Thanos during Endgame, she doesn’t rejoin the Guardians of the Galaxy. In fact, a scene near the end of the film shows Peter Quill/Star-Lord searching for Gamora on the Milano’s on-board computer, hinting that the team will be looking for her in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has yet to go into production, Gunn has teased a few upcoming things about the film, including big parts for both Rocket Raccoon and Kraglin, as well as a significant character’s death.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 currently has no release date. The film is expected to begin production in February 2021.
Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn revealed he played a role in writing Gamora's storyline for Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame.
