According to writer-director Kevin Smith, most of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot‘s third act was intended to appear in Mallrats 2.
“The third act of Reboot was taken from the unmade Mallrats 2 script,” Smith revealed during a recent Quarantine Watch Party of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. “Reboot‘s success then paved the way for a new Clerks 3 & Rats 2. So I wrote different scripts.”
Smith went on to specifically mention the “Iron Bob” suit, which appeared in the third act of Reboot. “First wrote him into Mallrats 2: Die Hard in a Mall,” he said of Iron Bob. “Then, when that flick didn’t happen, I stole the entire third act for Reboot. But in the old Rats 2, it wasn’t Russian terrorists, it was CANADIAN terrorists.”
Jay and Silent Bob Reboot released in 2019 as a sequel to 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Both films starred Jason Mewes’ Jay and Smith’s Silent Bob as they took a long road trip, during which they met many interesting characters along the way.
While Smith’s first attempt at Mallrats 2 didn’t work out, he is currently working on a new version titled Twilight of the Mallrats. Additionally, Smith has revealed Mallrats 2 will feature a scene involving Stan Lee, who cameoed in the first film.
Written, directed by and starring Kevin Smith, Twilight of the Mallrats also stars Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Shannen Doherty, Claire Forlani, Jason Mewes, Joey Lauren Adams, Michael Rooker, Renée Humphrey, Ethan Suplee and Sven-Ole Thorsen. The film has yet to receive a release date.
