The trailer, which was released on YouTube, teases a Blair-Witch-esque approach to the “real events” on which the film series was based. The trailer also reveals the series will debut on Netflix on July 3.
Ju-On (The Grudge) began with a couple of short films made in 1998 by Takashi Shimizu about a haunted house. In 2000, the first feature-length film, Ju-On: The Curse, was released in Japan with an American adaptation, The Grudge, following in 2004. Since then, there have been, to date, nine Japanese films, four American films and various novels, anime and comics published by Dark Horse Comics. There has even been a video game Ju-On: The Grudge – Haunted House Simulator, which was developed for the Wii in 2009.
The franchise has not seen a new installment in several years. The last Japanese outing for the franchise was the film Sadako vs. Kayako (2016), a Ring and Grudge crossover in the vein of Freddy vs. Jason. The movie did well in Japan. The latest attempt to revive The Grudge in North America, which was produced by Sam Raimi in 2020, was a flop with critics and audiences.
Directed by Sho Miyake (And Your Bird Can Sing), The Grudge will premiere on Netflix on July 3. The series stars Yoshiyoshi Arakawa, Yuina Kuroshima, Ririka and Kana Kurashina.
Netflix released a new trailer for the latest installment in Ju-On (The Grudge) franchise, which releases this summer.
