The Puella Magi Madoka Magica series takes a much different look at the world of magical girls and took the anime world by storm. Fans know that this short series appeared on the scene and quite literally blew up in popularity immediately after word spread about the unique dark nature of it.
The series has since spawned multiple spin-offs, including movies, manga, videogames, and a mobile game. Said mobile game goes by the title Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story and has spawned its own anime adaptation that aired its first season earlier this year, with a second season already announced.
This adaptation is not necessarily connected to the main Madoka series but what if it was? This list will take a look at a few reasons that it should be connected, along with a few others on why that would be a mistake.
10 IT SHOULD: IT WOULD GIVE FANS MORE OF THE MADOKA STORY
One complaint from some of the fans that loved the original Madoka Magica is the fact that the series is such a short experience. The short length is by no means a sin of the show, but a lot of those that went through the experience wouldn’t be opposed to more.
If this new series did directly connect to the main series, it could serve as a way to give fans more of a filling to go with the original instead of being a totally different and non-connected experience entirely.
9 IT SHOULDN’T: IT COULD CHEAPEN THE SERIES
A common fear of any fan of an anime series that spawns some kind of spin-off or sequel is that the follow-up material may cheapen the original experience. No one likes a let down being connected to their favorite show and that goes triple for Madoka Magica.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica is such a simple and sweet experience that the smallest blemish on a direct continuation would be a slap in the face that no one wants.
8 IT SHOULD: IT GIVES A NEW LOOK AT THE STORY WITH SIMILAR CHARACTERS
Magia Record is seen by many fans of the series as an alternate universe look at the original Madoka Magica series. If these two series ended up colliding in future seasons, then things could take a very cool turn.
This would give fans the chance to compare and contrast a new but similar story with similar characters.
7 IT SHOULDN’T: IT’S A REHASH
One thing that can be noted about the Magia Record series is the fact that it is indeed very similar to the original Madoka Magica series. This is one of the things that could end up having series fans believing that it cheapens the original experience.
Rehashed spin-offs are seen as plagues on good pieces of media and many fans may end up feeling that way if Magica Record was directly connected to Madoka Magica. Keeping the two series separate works much better.
6 IT SHOULD: IT EXTENDS THE UNIVERSE IN A COOL WAY
One cool thing about the multiverse connection theory is that it really shows off God Madoka’s power. The Magia Record mobile game shows God Madoka witnessing the events in this special world that her powers can’t touch.
This connects the worlds of these two series in a way that doesn’t directly put them together. It serves as a good extension of the original in the most inoffensive way possible.
5 IT SHOULDN’T: IT COULD FEEL LIKE A CASH GRAB
Much like an earlier point in the list, no fan of a unique and successful series wants an unnecessary spin-off or sequel.
Magia Record could easily fall prey to this sequel sin and end up feeling like a cash grab meant to get a quick buck for fans hungry for more Madoka. Unless the spin-off has a genuine reason to connect to the original series, then they should just stay separate.
4 IT SHOULD: IT SHOWS THE FULL EXTENT OF TWO CHARACTERS’ POWERS
The coolest thing about Magica Record being potentially directly connected to the original Madoka series is the fact that it shows the full power of God Madoka once she gets visual of the multiverse.
It also shows off the full power of Homura and her time-traveling power due to her creating more multiverses as well. This is another cool, loose connection that these series share.
3 IT SHOULDN’T: IT LACKS ONE THING THE ORIGINAL WAS LOVED FOR
One of the main reasons that fans followed the original series was Puella Magi Madoka Magica‘s main characters.
Many viewers got attached to Mami, Homura, Madoka, Sayaka, and Kyoko that they became part of the main attraction to follow. The new series lacks them, meaning that it may as well be its own unique thing.
2 IT SHOULD: AN EXTENDED STORYLINE
An extended plotline could be something that would do the Madoka series good, assuming it is done well. This new spin-off could easily fulfill that purpose.
However, this could be a slippery slope if done poorly or with too much ambition. There are quite a few things in Madoka that could be further explained, and a new series with good connections to the original anime could work well in improving this area.
1 IT SHOULDN’T: IT UNDERMINES A KEY PART OF THE ORIGINAL
One of the things that a direct connection would completely ruin is the fact that God Madoka put an end to Kyubey’s contracts and the magical girl curse across all of time and space.
If a new series came along that featured more magical girls, Kyubey, and the same war against witches, it would be a big slap in the face to Puella Magi Madoka Magica‘s original and satisfying ending.
Magia Record has already announced a second season, but should the Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story connect to the original anime?
