Puella Magi Madoka Magica is one of the most iconic anime out there. Since it’s blown up in popularity after its initial release it has spawned a myriad of spinoffs such as canon films, different manga, and even an RPG for mobile platforms called Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story.
However, this series is shown to be pulled away from the original Madoka Magica series. While it would seem the two series are completely different there are actually more connections than one would first believe.
8 THE MAGICAL GIRLS ARE BACK
One of the most simple connections is the fact that the magical girls of the series are back. The magical girls of the Madoka Magica series are very unique when compared to the magical girls seen in just about any other realm of the genre in anime and manga.
This is a very easy connection to the original series that would raise quite a few eyebrows and raise even more questions regarding the connection to the first series. This is a strange one considering the fact that Madoka put an end to the magical girl curse.
7 KYUBEY IS BACK
Another very simple connection between both these Puella Magi series is the fact that Kyubey is a big character that appears in both. In Magia Record, Kyubey returns filling the same role that he was so infamously known for in the original Madoka series.
In this series, once again Kyubey is seen getting really close to and seemingly teasing the main character with a series of cryptic messages regarding her wish and her new place as a magical girl in the war against witches.
6 MADOKA CONFIRMS A CONNECTION
Even before the Magia Record series became a thing, the original Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime confirmed a clear connection between itself and any spinoff series that may follow behind it. That, of course, happened once Madoka became a God and made the ultimate wish.
Her wish was to save all the magical girls from grief and witches. This wish not only saved girls across the globe but was shown to affect magical girls cursed from across the multiverse as well.
5 THE SAME RULES APPLY
Another connection that is similar to the first two is the fact that there are no changes from the original magical girl formula introduced in the original Madoka Magica series. A girl is under some kind of grief, Kyubey comes along and mentions a deal for them to make a wish, the girl is cursed to join the war against witches and maybe become a witch themself.
This is completely mirrored in the Magia Record series with no clear differences presented. It’s easy to see that this series was meant to be some kind of mirror to the original Madoka Magica series due to this basic similarity.
4 HOMURA AND HER ABILITY
Much like God Madoka did, Homura completely confirmed the existence of different universes and thus Magica Record through her ability in the original Madoka Magica series. Throughout her time travel adventures, Homura opened up a myriad of different timelines and universes.
This made it obvious that there are a lot of different looks at the world of Madoka, including other dimensions. While this can be the downfall of many series that use time travel, the Madoka series happened to make it work and turned it into something more.
3 MADOKA ACKNOWLEDGES THE WORLD OF THIS SERIES AS SOMETHING SPECIAL
In an event starring God Madoka from the Magica Record game she actually fully acknowledges the Magica Record universe. God Madoka is an omnipotent being. She is able to see anything and able to use her power to do just about anything. However, apparently the Magia Record universe is out of her control.
In this event, Madoka can see this new universe but she is unable to do anything about what is occurring there. She states that this “record” is special and out of her control.
2 THEY SHARE A KEY CHARACTER
Not only does Homura confirm a connection through her power of time travel, but she also confirms one by actually showing up in the world of the Magica Record series. Homura actually shows up in the Magia Record series as a character but there is a twist to her inclusion.
The Homura of this spinoff series isn’t the one from the anime, nor is she a different timeline’s Homura. They are two different characters but the same character at the same time. A very confusing concept.
1 OTHER SPINOFFS CONFIRM A CONNECTION
There is another spinoff series of Madoka Magica that confirms the existence of tons of parallel universes in the Madoka universe. The series Puella Magi Homura Tamura ~Parallel Worlds Do Not Remain Parallel Forever~ is a spinoff featuring a different Homura named Homura Tamura, traveling through different universes.
This is another multiverse confirmation for the series, especially due to the fact that God Madoka appears at the end of the series.
Magia Record is back, and there are many ways that it connects to and stays faithful to the original series.
