Marvel: 10 Things Only True Fans Know About Red She-Hulk | CBR

It was only a matter of time. Marvel went Hulk crazy for a while, introducing Red Hulk and Skaar, the Son of Hulk, and other characters, so Red She-Hulk felt like the next evolution.

Her identity made sense, too, as she turned out to be Betty Ross, brought back by an infusion of gamma radiation that made her like her father, Thunderbolt Ross. Betty’s transformation brought out an entirely different side of her, one that was capable of displaying rage and putting herself first rather than others. This resulted in a change in how she was perceived and made her one of the most powerful people on Earth.

10 FIRST APPEARED FIGHTING X-FORCE

The first appearance of Red She-Hulk involved her throwing down with the X-Men’s black ops group, X-Force. Red Hulk was hunting down Domino because she witnessed him killing someone, and wound up running right into her group, including X-Force.

The battle between Red Hulk and his allies and Domino and X-Force didn’t go in his favor, and it was Red She-Hulk who gave him a distraction to escape.

9 KICKED RED HULK OFF THE EMPIRE STATE

After working with Red Hulk initially, it wasn’t long before Betty showed her true colors. Frustrated with how her dad had acted in her life for so long, she turned on him in the middle of the second fight between him and X-Force.

Red Hulk got the upper hand briefly, but she convinced him into thinking she was on his side and then promptly kicked him off the Empire State Building while his guard was down.

8 CAN PUNCH THROUGH DIMENSIONS

At the beginning of things, she started out under the control of the Leader, who had a plan to kidnap all the biggest geniuses working for Avengers and Fantastic Four and drain their intelligence.

Betty tracked down Hank Pym, who locked himself off in the Mansion and altered the door he was behind to send whoever opened it to a different location. Unfortunately, Betty was easily able to punch through the door and the alternate dimension to wind up in the same location as him.

7 STOLE DOMINO’S OUTFIT

Betty’s first meeting with X-Force came with meeting Domino and Elektra, who were coming up with a plan to stop the combat between X-Force and Ross’ team. Betty’s plan was to take them both out for good, but Domino unexpectedly got an attack off that incinerated her outfit.

Frustrated by being left naked, Betty stripped Domino of her outfit before Elektra stabbed her, allowing them both to get away while Betty recovered. This explains why her first appearance involved having Elektra’s sai and such a tattered outfit.

6 JOINED THE DEFENDERS

Red She-Hulk didn’t stick around to do very much superhero work. She was mostly wrapped up in the story of the Hulk, and before anyone knew what was going on, she was transformed back into normal.

But eventually, she teams up with Dr. Strange, Iron Fist, Namor, Silver Surfer to form an impromptu version of The Defenders. There she gets to test her strength and ability to work on a team as the muscle, rather than another Hulk in a collection of Hulks.

5 NOT THE BIGGEST FAN OF BRUCE BANNER

As it turns out, Red She-Hulk doesn’t start out too fond of Bruce Banner. After the first major arc involving her is resolved, we see Betty talking to Bruce, with Bruce trying to discuss his feelings about her.

Betty brushes him off, pointing out that she was “dead” for a while, and that ended their marriage. Then, she points out that Bruce got married to Caiera on the planet Sakaar. Undaunted, Bruce still tried to give her back her wedding ring, only for her to snap and transform.

4 MARRIED MAJOR TALBOT

Very early in the Hulk’s career, Bruce fell in love with a woman named Jarella. Ruler of a subatomic kingdom, the Hulk rescued her world from a number of monsters, and the two wound up falling in love.

After a battle, Betty learned of Jarella’s existence thanks to Bruce talking while knocked out, and believed she’d lost him. Rather than wait around, she wound up getting married to Glenn Talbot, who would later get captured trying to rescue Betty’s father from the Soviets.

3 DEPOWERED

After a time, it got to a point where there were far too many Hulk type characters running around.

So when Hulk had the Extremis virus used on him to restore his mind, transforming him into “Doc Green,” he set about removing the gamma energy from everyone he knew. But rather than fighting Betty, he snuck the cure into her food, which turned her back to normal.

2 TRANSFORMS INTO THE HARPY

Red She-Hulk wasn’t the first time Betty transformed into something else. In Incredible Hulk #168, Betty is taken by MODOK, who experiments on her and infuses her with a massive influx of gamma energy.

This transforms her into the Harpy, who gets into it with Hulk and actually managed to knock him out at first thanks to an energy gun she has.

1 THE RETURN OF THE HARPY

Betty stayed out of sight after Bruce was killed, but Hulk eventually found her and admitted he was too traumatized to interact with her for months. While the two of them spoke though, an agent aiming to kill the Hulk sniped Betty from afar, unintentionally killing her.

However, thanks to the unique properties of gamma radiation, she made a return. This time, Betty was a fused mix between her Red She-Hulk form and her Harpy form, turning red instead of green.
