Marvel Is About to Reveal The Most Evil Hulk Persona's Origin

Marvel has announced Maestro, written by the character’s co-creator Peter David, will tell the origin story for one of the Hulk’s most infamous – and evil – personalities.

The Maestro first appeared twenty-eight years ago as the main villain in The Incredible Hulk: Future Imperfect, a two-part miniseries by David and George Pérez. Future Imperfect took place in a dystopian Earth, many years in the future, a world ravaged by nuclear disaster and ruled with an iron fist by the Maestro, an aged Hulk who possessed both a keen intellect as well as the incredible power of the green behemoth.

For decades, the events that led to the Hulk’s transformation into the Maestro have remained untold, but now David, along with artists Germán Peralta and Dale Keown, will show what happened to the one-time hero during the ninety-year span between the “present” and “future” of Future Imperfect. Not much is known about this timespan, except that it contained two nuclear wars in addition to The Maestro having to defeat the bulk of the world’s heroes.

The press release announcing the comic promises David, Peralta and Keown’s story will “answer questions that have haunted Hulk fans for years – and inspire some new ones along the way.”

“I had no idea that when I first created the Maestro for Future Imperfect, that he would have the kind of popularity and staying power he has now,” David said in a statement. “Until now, I’ve only been able to allude to his origins, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to explore them in this series, and I can’t wait for fans to see all the artwork that’s been coming in!”

“We couldn’t be more excited that we’re resuming distribution of Marvel Comics to the best fans in the world,” Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski added. “As we’ve announced, we will be observing a balanced release schedule over the next few weeks as the industry returns to normal – but we’re hard at work on many more new stories like this one, and we can’t wait to tell you all more about them! Expect more announcements very soon.”

Maestro #1, written by Peter David and illustrated by Germán Peralta and Dale Keown, with covers by Keown and George Pérez, arrives in August 2020.
