Marvel Studios may be preparing Nova for his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut.
According to a report by Daniel Richtman, a solo Nova project is in active development at Marvel. However, he did not specify whether the project will be a movie or a Disney+ series in the vein of Ms. Marvel or Moon Knight.
This isn’t the first hint that Nova is on his way to the MCU. In late 2018, Ant-Man co-writer Adam McKay revealed the idea of a Nova project has been in the works for some time now. “I think they’re kicking a Nova idea around,” he said at the time.
At the time of writing, few details about the project exist. For instance, it isn’t clear which character will lead the project. After all, several people have taken up the title over the years, including Richard Rider and Sam Alexander.
In the comics, Earthling Richard Rider became Nova after the last surviving member of Corps, Rhomann Dey, crash landed on Earth and bestowed his powers and duty upon him. Dey, as fans might recall, is the name of the Nova officer played by John C. Reilly in Guardians of the Galaxy. With Xandar destroyed during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, it is entirely possible we will see an injured Dey travel to Earth to find a replacement.
Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, most productions have halted entirely for the safety of the cast and crew. Marvel Studios currently has no return date for its films and may not for some time, although Falcon and the Winter Soldier has just received permission to resume filming in the Czech Republic. It is unclear how this will impact development on a potential Nova project.
Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow — the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Rick Mason and Rachel Weisz. The film arrives in theaters Nov. 6.
Marvel Studios is reportedly developing a project based on Nova, a member of the galactic peace-keeping force introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy.
