WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 7 of My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!, now streaming on Crunchyroll.
This week, the My Next Life as a Villainess anime provides a sample of Katarina’s original life, and the cherished friendship she enjoyed back then. Katarina’s original name is unknown, but her friend was nicknamed Acchan, and it seems that not even death could keep these good friends apart for long. Fortune Lover arranged for a fateful meeting between the girls, isekai style.
An isekai anime spends most of its time in the new world, but there may a few flashbacks to what came before, and My Next Life as a Villainess shows Katarina’s best friend from her last year of middle school. She was a tree climber even back then, and she fell right off a branch and landed on a classmate, butt-first (mirroring Katarina once did that as a child in the game). This was a happy meeting: Katarina apologized and the girls decided to be friends right away. Katarina, being so shy, had never had a good friend before.
Acchan was happy to lend Katarina her otome games, and the last one Katarina played was indeed Fortune Lover. Katarina loved it, though she complained about how tough it is to complete the Geordo romance option. Tragically, Katarina had a fatal traffic accident, and Acchan was reduced to tears when she saw Katarina’s last text message to her. Katarina (perhaps in a purgatory state) was thinking that she’d love to meet Acchan again, even if death itself got in the way.
Katarina isn’t the only one who remembers the days of 9th grade in Japan. This episode’s flashbacks were, in fact, a dream that the shy but gorgeous Sophia Ascart was having, and she bolts upright in bed when she awakes, totally confused. She is convinced that these odd visions of a faraway place are just a dream, and that is indeed what she tells her new friend Katarina when they meet in the latter’s garden that morning. She’s a little troubled by these visions from “long ago.”
Katarina simply comforts Sophia and assures her that it is completely normal to have bad or weird dreams when someone is nervous. After all, these girls and most of their friends are about to take some important exams at their magic academy, and Katarina declares that both girls must do their best (and Sophia agrees).
But it’s possible that Katarina, who is 100% aware of her isekai heroine status, realized exactly what Sophia was saying and simply decided not to explain it to her. Perhaps she is saving that for later, and wants to figure out a way to ease Sophia into that revelation. Those weren’t dreams, they were memories, and Sophia might or might not be able to handle the shock. She was once Acchan, the friend of her mysterious classmate, and now the girls have united once again in bizarre circumstances.
It’s left up in the air whether Sophia and Katarina will resume their friendship from real life, and it is unknown how Sophia ended up in Fortune Lover alongside her friend. Katarina got there via a fatal traffic accident, but did Sophia also suffer an accident… or was it something more deliberate? That is a dark but real possibility that future episodes might confirm or debunk.
Katarina swore that not even death would end her friendship with Acchan, and Fortune Lover is granting her wish, probably with strings attached.

Katarina thought that she was reborn in Fortune Lover alone, but that might not be the case after all.
