WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of Never Have I Ever, now available on Netflix.
Netflix’s Never Have I Ever focuses on Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a Tamil-American teenager in a California high school trying to find love. Her freshman year was a total disaster because her dad died and she got paralyzed temporarily. But now, with her spirits back up, she’s looking to get a boyfriend.
She also wants her besties, Eleanor (Ramona Young) and Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez) to follow the same path, but little does she know El has a boyfriend secretly and Fab’s struggling with her homosexuality. This leads to a fracture in the friendship but there’s one bright ray of light as Devi actually makes headway with the boy of her dreams, Paxton (Darren Barnet). However, by the time the finale rolls around, Devi finds herself in a very surprising love triangle.
Devi makes an audacious move early on in the series, asking Pax to sleep together. He agrees but when she gets cold feet, he keeps her as a friend as he knows she’s not mature. However, she keeps pursuing him, even letting the school think they hooked up. She masks Pax keeping her in the friend zone, which is made easier by him using Devi who connects with his special-needs sister, Rebecca (Lily D. Moore). Unfortunately, Paxton distances himself from Devi towards the end as her mom, Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan), thinks he’s a typical Cali boy, not knowing it’s the other way around. Seeing as Devi lied about them having sex as well, he gives her the cold shoulder.
It’s bad timing because Devi and her mother end up breaking their relationship towards the season finale. Devi goes to stay with her nemesis Ben (Jaren Lewison) after they became close following a Model U.N. function. They realize they have a lot in common despite always trying to outdo and sabotage each other academically. Ben also bonds with Nalini as his own parents neglect him, and at dinner, he actually covers for Devi when she was about to get in trouble for a wild night out. It’s easy to tell he likes her, although she rebuffs his advances at a party. Still, Ben is there for her when she leaves home as she just can’t stand her mom’s control anymore.
It all comes to a head when the mom and Devi’s cousin, Kamala (Richa Moorjani) go to throw the father’s ashes into the ocean. Devi’s not involved but when she gets word, she realizes it’s an opportunity she can’t miss. Ben took her in as he had a mansion to himself and with her friends’ help, which comes despite them bashing her for being selfish in previous episodes, Devi heads off to the beach. Ben takes her as time’s running out, and she reconciles with her family in a warm moment. Seeing him for his true worth, Devi makes out with Ben in the final sequence of the season after finding him asleep and waiting in the car to make sure everything worked out.
The big twist comes when Pax ends up at Devi’s home, not knowing any of this drama occurred. He tried calling her before but didn’t get through, and now he’s come to profess his love. Rebecca scolded him for liking superficial girls when Devi, an immature but caring person, was right in front all along. It seems it’s too little, too late but fans know she’ll be torn once she knows Pax feels for her. From having no boyfriend to hooking up with Ben to having Pax chasing her down, Devi has quite the decision ahead of her.
Created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, Never Have I Ever stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Darren Barnet, Ramona Young, Lee Rodriguez, Richa Moorjani, Poorna Jagannathan, Jaren Lewison and John McEnroe. Season 1 is available on Netflix.
