One Piece: Why Orochi, the Shogun of Wano, Could Be a Major Threat

WARNING: The following contains for One Piece, Episode 926, “A Desperate Situation! Orochi’s Menacing Oniwabanshu,” now available on Crunchyroll, Funimation, Hulu and VRV.

Kaido, who is one of the Four Yonko, is one of the most dangerous adversaries the Straw Hat Pirates have faced in One Piece. The man can transform into a dragon and took Luffy down in a couple of strikes. On top of that, Kaido demands respect from numerous Animal Pirates, who are empowered by artificial Devil Fruits that allow them to take on bestial powers. In the numerous engagements between the Straw Hat Pirates and Kaido’s forces, it has been demonstrated that Kaido’s crew has few equals.

However, Orochi, the Shogun of Wano, may just prove to be an equal match to the Straw Hat Pirates, too, even though he doesn’t look it.

In “A Desperate Situation! Orochi’s Menacing Oniwabanshu,” Orochi appears to be a drunken, paranoid man. He fears ghosts on the twentieth anniversary of his uprising (though he should fear that those he believes to be dead actually traveled forward in time to exact revenge on him, which is what happened), and he takes any slight against him incredibly personally, to the point where he will use his authority to punish those who he deems unruly.

He is also prone to numerous vices that make him weak. He’s easily seduced by woman and often drunk thanks to his love of sake. This combination of vices allows Nico Robin to infiltrate Orochi’s court and seduce him. By just playing coy and sweet near him, she is able to receive a personal invitation to the very festival the Straw Hats plan on using to overthrow Orochi.

Still, it would be wrong to underestimate Orochi. His tactics helped him conquer Wano Country, after all. While there are false stories surrounding his swordsmanship skills, he is a brilliant tactician.

One of the most dangerous aspects of Orochi are his allies. In “A Desperate Situation! Orochi’s Menacing Oniwabanshu,” his crew of ninjas attacks Robin on an espionage mission, springing all at once. This is unlike Kaido’s headliners, who thus far have fought the Straw Hats one-on-one, often to their downfall. While their individual powers are uncertain, their coordinated attacks make them incredibly lethal.

Most dangerous of all is their leader, Fukurokuju. This long-headed ninja’s true powers have yet to be revealed in the anime, so it’s unclear just how dangerous this man is. However, it is clear that he’s incredibly cunning, passing information along to the necessary channels. While he might not be as powerful as, say, the walking dinosaur known as Page 1, he has access to true power: information. This information could very well be what undermines the entire rebellion against Kaido, maintaining the status quo of Wano Country.

Orochi, the Shogun of Wano, might not appear to be all that threatening. However, he might very well be the one to undermine the Straw Hats.
