WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 3, “Wicked Old World.”
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels has left Los Angeles detective, Tiago (Daniel Zovatto), in a state of disarray with the race war stirring between his Mexicans and the predominantly white police force in the ’30s. He had to shoot his own brother, Raul (Adam Rodriguez), to save his partner, Lewis (Nathan Lane), but as his guilt wears on him, Tiago has found comfort in Sister Molly (Kerry Bishé).
Unfortunately, he’s supposed to be investigating her and her mom, Adelaide (Amy Madigan), as their shady church has been linked to some recent murders Mexicans are being framed for. However, as Tiago loses sight of the bigger picture, the third episode, “Wicked Old World,” whips up a new affair that will surely have deadly consequences.
The last episode found Tiago smitten by Molly’s voice at Joyful Voices Ministry, like a sailor entranced by a siren. He and Lewis tracked the Hazlett family murders to them as the patriarch James did financing for Adelaide. Tiago tries to get more info from Molly but really, he’s falling for her. And she plays up the seductress role well, innocently tempting him, so much so her mom has a bodyguard, Randolph (David Figlioli) tailing the cop.
Hearing his brother has recovered gives Tiago the impetus to make a move as he takes Molly to the carnival, and on the pier, after an amazing first date, they share a passionate kiss. However, Randolph’s spying and notices her giving back the Popeye doll Tiago won her to avoid suspicion. When Molly gets home, though, Adelaide’s humming the sailor’s theme song, which scares the daughter as she knows she shouldn’t be jeopardizing their cult-like organization.
Adelaide has been hinted at being in corrupt business practices so the last thing she needs is a cop so close to home. Randolph also has a racist vibe to him so it seems he’ll be looking to kill Tiago for the affair, especially as the cult wants fewer eyes on James’ shady deals. Interestingly, towards the end of the episode, Lewis meets Tiago for drinks and reveals he dug up info on Molly that shows she and James actually had an affair. James was older and kept it from his family, pretending and living a double life with Molly. Apparently, it was a lavish one as he bought a beach house for his mistress. But now, Tiago believes she had a hand in his murder.
It seems she wanted no trail of their affair and full access to everything he bought for her. As for Lewis’ conspiracy theory, he believes the cult sold James’ family out to be killed by the Nazis so they could secure the roadway contracts in LA. This would give Molly an epic payday, free her from the burden of the affair and allow the Nazis to get another leg up on the infrastructural empire they’re establishing. It’s a lot to take in and Lewis wants Tiago to dig deeper while he tends to a Nazi hunt gone bad. However, when Tiago disagrees with Molly being a suspect, his partner lashes out, not realizing Tiago’s compromised. At this point, one can now see the Nazis moving in to clear the table by taking Molly and her family out. They’re uncovering a dark web of secrets and Tiago and Molly’s lust could be the catalyst for everyone’s downfall.
