Zayn has been visibly absent from WWE matches for more than a month. He opted to stay at home during the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, while the WWE has been cleared to continue operations from its facilities in Orlando. With the title vacant, the WWE will hold a new tournament this Friday to determine a new champion.
In response, Zayn shared a statement through his Twitter, vehemently disagreeing with the WWE’s decision. “I disagree with this decision and no matter what anyone says, I am still undefeated and therefore still the Intercontinental Champion,” he wrote.
Zayn won the title this past March at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event against Braun Strowman, before defending the title against Daniel Bryan during Wrestlemania 36 in early April.
Earlier this week, Becky Lynch vacated her own title as the WWE Raw Women’s Champion due to her recent pregnancy. However, the title had been abdicated by Lynch to Azuka after she won the Money in the Bank PPV event the previous night.
Sami Zayn has posted a public statement on the WWE's decision to strip him of his championship title.
