Supergirl Destroys an Iconic Part of the Show's Mythology | CBR

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for “The Missing Link,” the penultimate episode of Supergirl Season 5.

Supergirl just bid goodbye to the DEO headquarters.

In “The Missing Link,” the penultimate episode of Season 5, the Super Friends tracked down Rama Khan just as he attempted to activate a fault line in Portland, Oregon. They managed to capture him and bring him back to the DEO — but, as it turns out, that’s exactly what he wanted.

When Brainy interrogated Rama Khan, he attempted to make a bargain: Rama Khan’s freedom for a chance to board Leviathan’s ship. However, Rama Khan quickly made it clear he was there only because he wanted to be. “Why would I want to leave when I worked so hard to get in?” he shot back.

With that, Rama Khan burst from his chains. Supergirl leapt in to fight him, but he had a plan for that. Using his terrakinesis, he drew the DEO’s Kryptonite stockpile out of storage. Kara collapsed, even as Rama Khan’s powers began to tear the building apart. Fortunately, Martian Manhunter and Miss Martian swooped in just in time to save everyone before the building completely collapsed in on itself. However, the chaos allowed Rama Khan to take off with the Kryptonite in tow.

Devastated, Brainy met with Lex to confess his failures, only to be met with laughter. “Of course I knew that you would rush in to help your little friends!” Lex crowed. “You’re all gooey hero on the inside. I don’t have to be a genius to know that. But don’t worry, everything is right on track. Even the loss of the DEO is a tax write-off.”

“You wanted Rama Khan to be brought here to get the Kryptonite,” Brainy realized.

“I gave Leviathan a little trinket from the Fortress that, with Kryptonite, will make Supergirl’s life miserable, and they were very appreciative,” Lex confirmed. He is likely referring to either Myriad or the lead-dispersal device that stopped the Daxamite invasion in Season 2.

“You got an invite to the ship,” Brainy said.

“I told you: trust the process, save the world,” Lex replied with a grin.

Since the show returned post-“Crisis on Infinite Earths,” Brainy has worked with Lex in order to keep tabs on him. His doppelganger advised him not to stop Lex, as Leviathan was the bigger threat. As a result, they have been working together to stop the organization once and for all, with plans to strip Leviathan of their immortality by using a device stored on their ship. Along the way, Brainy has withdrawn from his friends for their own safety. Now, he realizes just how much Lex has been manipulating him — all at the cost of the DEO headquarters.

This version of DEO headquarters has been a series mainstay since Season 2. When Supergirl moved production up to Vancouver to join its fellow Arrowverse series, a new series of sets was created, including DEO headquarters. Since then, the Super Friends have worked largely out of this location. However, with J’onn, Kara and Alex distancing themselves from the organization, it seems the show could be done with the DEO for good sooner rather than later.

Airing Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers. The Season 5 finale will air May 17.
