Shoujo anime is targeted at young girls and almost always has a romance between characters that is lighthearted and full of fluff. Over the years, anime fans were introduced to legendary couples from shoujo anime such as Nanami Momozono and Tomoe from Kamisama Kiss or lesser-known, but popular at the time, couple Mei Tachibana and Yamato Kurosawa from Say I Love You.
However, there are also couples from shoujo that are not as well-known that you may have never heard of. Here are the five most famous couples in shoujo anime, as well as five that often go overlooked.
10 Overlooked: Yukino Miyazawa & Soichiro Arima (His And Her Circumstances)
While Yukino Miyazawa acted as an honors student and was a perfect girl in the eyes of her classmates. In truth, however, she was a total slob who studied hard at home. Despite this, Soichiro Arima found out her secret and accepted her for who she was.
Yukino and Soichiro’s relationship teaches viewers how important it is to be yourself with a loved one and how happy a relationship can be even when both parties accept each others’ faults.
9 Popular: Shizuku Mizutani & Haru Yoshida (My Little Monster)
My Little Monster was popular when it first debuted, and so was the main couple of Shizuku Mizutani and Haru Yoshida. The pairing of a delinquent and a hardworking studying girl seemed to be all the rage at the time. However, Haru would sometimes display acts of extreme jealousy toward men who would get near Shizuku and even be abusive at times. If you look back, this couple was not that healthy at all, no matter how many sparkles you put around them.
8 Overlooked: Risa Koizumi & Atsushi Otani (Lovely★Complex)
Risa Koizumi and Atsushi Otani are, at first, treated as a comedy-duo because of their height difference. While Risa is tall for an average Japanese girl, Atsushi is small for an ordinary Japanese boy. Yet, though they fight a lot, Risa ends up falling for Atsushi first with a heart full of unrequited love. When they finally confirm their feelings for each other, it’s refreshing to see how they act toward each other.
7 Popular: Miaka Yuuki & Tamahome (Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play)
Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play was one of the most famous fantasy/romance anime back in the day, as was the coupling of Miaka Yuuki and Tamahome. Although it has been quite a while since they were in the spotlight, they reemerge in sequels. Miaka and Tamahome may have met in a book, but, even after Miaka leaves the world, they find each other falling in love again.
6 Overlooked: Mikan Sakura & Natsume Hyuuga (Alice Academy)
Alice Academy is quite an overlooked series, in general, as the anime did not delve into the full plot of the manga as well as the main couple, Mikan Sakura and Natsume Hyuuga.
After joining Alice Academy and learning she has a rare power to deflect other powers—powers, in this instance, being referred to as “Alices”—she also encounters Natsume, who has the Alice to ignite flames. Throughout the series, Mikan and Natsume butt heads, but they also bud a romance that is heartbreaking yet sweet.
5 Popular: Misaki Ayuzawa & Takumi Usui (Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama!)
Misaki Ayuazawa became the first female president at her school and runs it with an iron fist, but she also works part-time at a maid cafe to support her family. On the other hand, Takumi Usui finds out her secret and is attracted to her because of her strong personality. While Misaki and Takumi’s relationship was rightfully famous, they overshadowed a lot of other couples that may have been in shoujo anime at the time.
4 Overlooked: Sakura Kinomoto & Syaoran Li (Cardcaptor Sakura)
Cardcaptor Sakura is one of the most famous magical girl anime out there, but, with the flow of time, Sakura Kinomoto and Syaoran Li’s relationship has been pushed aside in favor of other couples.
What makes their relationship so special is that they began as enemies, but they slowly came to understand each other and eventually work together. They are even destined to be together in multiple CLAMP universes such as Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and xxxHOLiC.
3 Popular: Tohru Honda & Kyo Sohma (Fruits Basket)
Tohru Honda and Kyo Sohma were at one time the most popular coupling all across anime. With the debut of Fruits Basket, fans were exposed to their first male tsundere character, Kyo. Tohru and Kyo’s relationship was quite an impactful one, as it showed how Tohru accepted Kyo no matter what and how she would always support him. While their popularity exploded, it was well-earned, and they remain one of the most beloved anime couples in history.
2 Overlooked: Sawako Kuronuma & Kazehaya Shouta (From Me To You)
While Sawako Kuronuma is called Sadako and avoided because she looks like the main character from The Ring, Kazehaya Shouta fell in love with her smile at the entrance ceremony. As Sawako gains the confidence to accept herself and make friends, Kazehaya is there to support her as a friend, and eventually, a boyfriend.
Sawako and Kazehaya have a slow-burning relationship, so, perhaps this is why they are so overlooked, but it is quite a sweet romance. It helps that they are both cinnamon rolls, too.
1 Popular: Usagi Tsukino & Mamoru Chiba (Sailor Moon)
No one can beat the magical girl couple of Usagi Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba when it comes to destined romance. Sailor Moon’s popularity has not faded one bit in the decades it debuted in, and neither has the relationship between the main couple.
Even as ordinary citizens, they are both the reincarnation of Princess Serenity and King Endymion, who loved each other on the moon. It is no wonder they fall in love again and overcome the tragedies that befall them each time.
Shoujo anime always features love and romance, and, while there are tons of beloved couples out there, a few deserve some more attention.
