The Last Kids on Earth's Monstrous Season 2 Ending, Explained

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 2 of The Last Kids on Earth, now streaming on Netflix.

Netflix’s The Last Kids on Earth concludes with a traitor right in Wakefield’s backyard, as Jack and the other teens try to stop Rezzoch’s portal from opening. They’ve been tracking missing zombies, but to their surprise, it’s not Bardle kidnapping them, it’s Jack’s mentor, Thrull. He’s been sacrificing them to the Tree of Entry, allowing Rezzoch to suck their brains in, spit the undead back out and grow stronger to open her portal for invasion.

But when Thrull doesn’t have the final piece of the puzzle, Jack’s Beastiary, he resorts to desperate measures to track the book down. This results in a scary season finale, “Dawn of Rezzoch,” that places the kids, as well as the other monsters in grave danger.

Thrull wants the Beastiary, as it contains the essences of various alien monsters. He plans to offer this to the tree so Rezzoch can open the rift even quicker. He allows her energy to bond with him and as the tree integrates with his body, he becomes a giant Ent-like creature. Thrull hunts the kids down to force Jack to give him the book, with Rezzoch growing impatient at being kept in her cosmic dimension.

Thrull has another secret weapon up his sleeve: He can now control the zombies Rezzoch fed on initially. He assembles an army of the undead and marches on the town. Thrull’s taking the war to Jack because he knows the boy would give the book up if the lives of his friends and the friendly creatures seeking refuge in Wakefield hung in the balance.

Thrull doesn’t anticipate a revolution, though, as Bardle has rallied the monsters to form a legion. They don’t want Rezzoch to invade, and as they’ve bonded with the kids, they want to protect their new home. Bardle’s army unites with the teens and war erupts as they try to swat away the zombies and keep the Beastiary out of Thrull’s reach.

The villain proves merciless and too powerful, though, overpowering the army and breaking the tree house down. This results in Jack jumping into a homemade Iron Man-like suit and making one final stand by leaping into Thrull’s mouth. Little does Thrull know, Jack has a trump card of his own up his sleeve.

Jack actually has cans of weedicide with him and he uses fireworks to blow the gas canisters up. The flammable mixture explodes after igniting, and as Thrull’s destroyed, Jack leaps out, barely escaping. He reunites with his friends, throwing a pizza party to celebrate. They’ve dodged a massive bullet and move the tree house closer to the monsters’ haven at Joe’s Pizza.

It brings the neighborhood closer together for safety purposes as the zombies are no longer mind-controlled and resume their roaming. But as the coalition celebrates, Jack’s bat drips of the blue goo from swatting the zombies and Tree-Thrull. As the droplets hit the ground, the camera zooms into the tree stump left behind in the woods and Rezzoch’s face comes up. She still has a connection to this world since Thrull and the zombies had her essence in their bloodstreams, and it appears this is enough to have her at least attempt to force the portal open.

The Last Kids on Earth Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix. It stars Mark Hamill, Rosario Dawson, Catherine O’Hara, Keith David, Bruce Campbell, Garland Whitt, Montse Hernandez, Charles Demers and Nick Wolfhard.
