As a follow-up to 2013’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us, the PlayStation 4-exclusive is one of the most anticipated games in living memory. However, alongside a slew of delays and recent spoiler leak, the road to The Last of Us Part II has been an arduous one. With the game’s official release in sight, Sony is amping up its marketing campaign.

Only recently, The Last of Us Part II was hit with a series of major leaks that reportedly came from an early version of the game. Although those involved weren’t employees of Naughty Dog or Sony and have since been caught, a developer spokesperson asked players to stay off the internet to avoid the spoilers. With the trailer announcement, it didn’t take long for the reply section to fill with screenshots of the leaks.

The Last of Us Part II picks up the story of Ellie and Joel following the conclusion of the original game. The award-winning 2013 title tasked gamers with playing as both characters as they traversed an apocalyptic world where humans had been turned into zombies by a mutated fungus. As well as dealing with cannibalistic monsters, The Last of Us took a leaf out of The Walking Dead‘s book and had the rest of humanity as an equally dangerous threat.

Although there’s much of the same in The Last of Us Part II, the game shows a time jump and a more mature version of Ellie as the lead. The first trailer debuted way back in 2016 and was followed by the second (much larger) gameplay trailer as part of 2018’s Paris Games Week. Fans last saw a trailer for The Last of Us Part II in a Sony State of Play presentation last September, meaning it’s been a while since players have had something new to look at.
