Ava DuVernay has provided an update on the status of her New Gods film. The director replied to a fan on Twitter who asked for news on the long-gestating DC Films project.
“Because you asked so nicely…working on fourth draft of a scene featuring All Widow this week.” DuVernay wrote. In comics canon, All-Widow is the queen of the Bugs, an insectoid race that lives underneath the paradise of New Genesis. Forager, a longtime supporting character, is a member of the Bugs.
That DuVernay is using a character like All-Widow speaks to the care with which she is approaching the script. Though several members of the New Gods, like the despot Darkseid and the statuesque Big Barda, are well known, the mythology that Jack Kirby created is vast. Apparently DuVernay intends to tackle all aspects of the Fourth World mythology, from the high to the low.
The New Gods are a race of ancient immortal beings created by Jack Kirby in 1971. They are split into two races; the denizens of New Genesis, ruled by the benevolent Highfather, and Apokolips, ruled with an iron fist by Darkseid.
Directed by Ava DuVernay with a script by DuVernay and Tom King, New Gods currently has no release date or cast announced.
Director Ava DuVernay confirms that All-Widow, queen of the Bugs, will appear in her adaptation of New Gods.
