Tripping on Acid is a Bad Idea When You Share a Mind With a Superhero

In every installment of I Love Ya But You’re Strange I spotlight strange but ultimately endearing comic stories. Feel free to e-mail me at brianc@cbr.com if you have a suggestion for a future installment!

I continue a month’s worth of I Love Ya but You’re Strange’s (as a sort of “April Fool’s” month) with a spotlight on a strange issue of Captain Marvel, suggested by my pal Ian Gould, where Rick Jones tripped on acid while sharing a mind with Captain Marvel.

As you may or may not know, for a while there, Rick Jones and Captain Marvel (the Kree one, whose real name was Mar-Vell) essentially shared a body. They would switch places, with one of them being in the Negative Zone while the other one would be on Earth. This was a problem for Rick, who was trying to have a career as a rock and roll musician.

Anyhow, in Captain Marvel #35 (by Steve Englehart, Mike Friedrich and Alfredo Alcala), Rick switched places to allow Captain Marvel to get some much-needed medical attention…

After a fill-in issue, Rick headed off on his tour in Captain Marvel #37 (by Englehart, Al Milgrom and Klaus Janson), with Mar-Vell going out of his way to give Rick some free time…

While on tour, one of Rick’s friends gives him some “Vitamin C”…obviously, we all know it isn’t really Vitamin C…

Later, Rick and Mar-Vell were forced to change places and Rick, while hanging out in the Negative Zone, popped his Vitamin C pill and, well, he started tripping balls…

Rick and Captain Marvel had always been able to communicate with each other through their minds, but as time went by, their mental connection was more of a passive one, where they were connected without even TRYING to do so and thus, Rick’s bad trip began to affect Captain Marvel, as well, who was in the middle of a battle with the Watcher…

Things went poorly for ol’ Mar-Vell, as he couldn’t concentrate…

In the next issue, Mar-Vell used his cosmic powers to sober himself up…

Very fun stuff. I love how Englehart handled it so that people could realistically miss the drug reference, if they were young kids.

Thanks for the suggestion, Ian!
