The Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer’s website has a giant, unmissable countdown clock ticking away the seconds until May 4 without any explanation as to what we can expect when the timer hits zero. This is exciting for fans of her work because it could signal the announcement of many different projects — if it is even a project at all.
Many fans believe the countdown signals the arrival of the long awaited Midnight Sun, Meyer’s unreleased Twilight companion novel that shifts the first book’s perspective to the narrative voice of brooding, mind-reading vampire, Edward Cullen. The seemingly cursed novel has been on hold since the first few chapters of the book were leaked online in 2008. In response Meyer posted her unfinished chapters to her website, and announced that she had put further work on the book on hold.
The book was again stalled in 2015 with the release of Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian, which was the retelling of the first 50 Shades of Grey novel, a project infamously known to have started as Twilight fanfiction. At the time, Meyer again put her work on Midnight Sun on hold because the E.L. James novel is essentially exactly what she was trying to do, and James’ release knocked the wind out of her sails.
While fans still hope Midnight Sun will eventually see the light of day, perhaps that book is cursed and the clock actually has nothing to do with it. Instead, it could be about a different Meyer property that fans have been eager to hear an update on. The Host is a 2008 novel that was adapted into a 2013 film starring four-time Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world after an alien invasion took over the bodies of the human race a la Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Also a love story, Meyer originally said the novel would be the first in a planned trilogy. However, there has been virtually no update to this statement since and fans have been waiting over a decade for the next chapter in Wanderer’s epic journey. Maybe the countdown clock is finally a sign that this series is making a triumphant return. The clock’s background does seem to have a space vibe, so maybe it’s a clue!
It’s also possible this mysterious clock has nothing to do with Meyer’s novels at all. Meyer also has a production company called Fickle Fish Films that not only produced The Host adaptation, but also the Keri Russell film Austenland, based on a book of the same name, about a Jane Austen-obsessed woman who travels to an Austen-inspired role-playing resort in England. Fickle Fish Films focuses on book adaptations, so perhaps with the recent VOD success of Emma, the company feels it is the appropriate time to announce their very own novel-inspired costume drama. Maybe the announcement will come when the clock hits zero.
Fans of Stephenie Meyer eagerly await the big reveal when the countdown clock hits zero on Monday, May 4. For now, though, the possibilities and anticipation are very exciting!
