Like many shonen anime, Dragon Ball Z features a lot of different transformations. The franchise is particularly notable for its Super Saiyan transformation, which has had many iterations of the years, each more powerful than the last. However, the weirdest version of the form arrived during the Majin Buu Saga: Super Saiyan 3. In this video, we’re going to go through just why this power-up is so bizarre and a major outlier in the franchise.
Achieved by Goku before Gotenks (the fusion of Trunks and Goten) later exhibited the same ability, Super Saiyan 3 was the final transformation in Dragon Ball Z and resulted in an even more intense change to the user’s body than previous forms. When going Super Saiyan 3, the hair of the user grows quite long, and they somewhat inexplicably lose their eyebrows. The change itself is pretty weird, and series creator Akira Toriyama has previously referred to it as “flashy.” The transformation — which Goku had kept a secret — was helpful in fighting back against Buu and his various forms. However, the sequence that occurs as Goku makes this transformation is genuinely weird, playing like something out of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Check out the video below for more reasons Super Saiyan 3 is Dragon Ball Z‘s weirdest power-up.
Dragon Ball Super was the most recent installment in the franchise, not counting the original net animation Super Dragon Ball Heroes. Although it’s unclear just when — or if — the series will return, the Dragon Ball franchise is popular, so it’s unlikely to stay gone for long. The manga currently expands on the ending of Dragon Ball Super, taking Goku and Vegeta into space to fight against the energy-absorbing Moro. However, it’s unclear if when the anime returns it will actually pull from that plotline.
