Witwer Explains The Main Difference Between Riverdale And Star Wars

Actor Sam Witwer compared his brief stint on The CW’s Riverdaleplaying Jughead’s teacher Mr. Rupert Chipping, to his experience playing Darth Maul in the Star Wars franchise.

Witwer talked about a notorious scene in which his Riverdale character abruptly committed suicide, as reported by io9. Back in November 2019 after a five-episode run, Mr. Chipping leaped to his death through a stained glass window. Only in a recent episode did viewers discover the reason for Mr. Chipping taking his own life – he had failed to stop Jughead from committing a murder and getting away with it, in order to become a writer of the Baxter Brothers series of mystery books.

Before then, Mr. Chipping’s motive for ending his life was as much a mystery for Witwer as it was for viewers. While filming the suicide scene, Witmer was not given any explanation for Mr. Chipping’s motives. He described taking the role with little information on it: “Riverdale calls me up and goes, ‘We want you to be on the show. We really need you to say yes and fly out tomorrow. Can you do us this favor?’ And I’m like, ‘…OK.’ That was the last communication I had with them. Any questions I had went, I’m sorry, sadly unanswered.”

Witwer contrasted this experience with portraying Darth Maul on Star Wars: Clone Wars and Solo: A Star Wars Story. “We talked for months before we recorded at all, to try to figure out how best to tell the story. We would go back and forth. Although I wasn’t the writer, we were discussing it and we were throwing out ideas for a long time before we even attempted to do it.”

“Even with Ron Howard and [Solo: A Star Wars Story], there were discussions,” said Witwer. “It wasn’t just a one-voice session, say these lines and out…” Laughing, he added, “Riverdale doesn’t work that way.”

Airing Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Riverdale stars KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Cole Sprouse, Madelaine Petsch, Casey Cott, Vanessa Morgan, Mark Consuelos, Skeet Ulrich, Marisol Nichols and Madchen Amick.
