At one point, there were no two teams bigger than the Teen Titans and the X-Men. Chris Claremont had turned the X-Men from a bunch of weirdos in yellow and black costumes to one of the most popular books on the stands, while Marv Wolfman elevated the Teen Titans into being more than just some sidekicks. The two teams even worked together in a crossover, where they’d fight against the Dark Phoenix, Darkseid, and more.
But what would happen if the two teams really got into it? This list looks at the nine most integral members of both groups during their heyday, and talks about who would come out the victor in match ups against their opponents.
10 DONNA TROY VS. ROGUE: ROGUE
Rogue gained superpowers by draining Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel at the time) completely dry. Of course, Rogue has a conscience so she’d let go before Donna was done. The only thing that would help Donna is her Amazonian training, but Rogue would have some of that too thanks to gaining Donna’s memories. Donna would have to hope to be saved by some of her teammates if she was going to stand a chance against an opponent like this.
9 KID FLASH VS. BANSHEE: KID FLASH
Being generous, maybe Banshee starts out with the sonic scream and takes Wally out before he can even get close. Maybe. But it’s not as if Kid Flash isn’t used to dealing with sound based villains like the Pied Piper. Wally’s faster than anyone Banshee’s ever confronted before, and his mastery of the speed force even when he’s on the Titans is more than enough to take Banshee out early on.
8 ARSENAL VS. GAMBIT: GAMBIT
This is quite the match up overall. Gambit’s an incredible fighter who’s been trained as a member of the Thieves’ Guild.
Meanwhile, Arsenal has mastered the ability to turn anything he holds into a weapon. That sounds good on paper, but ultimately Gambit can apparently gain super strength and agility from his mutant power. That’s the kind of edge that leaves one with the win at the end of it all.
7 COLOSSUS VS. CYBORG: CYBORG
Canonically, Cyborg is more impressive than Colossus. Admittedly, their record in battle is terrible on both ends. Colossus is always getting squashed by Hulk, Juggernaut, and anyone else with super strength. Meanwhile, cyborg gets attacked viciously to “prove” how dangerous a threat the bad guy is, because he can be reassembled later. Because of Cyborg not only outmatching Colossus in terms of power, but in versatility, he edges out a victory. Hard to beat a guy made of metal who also has laser arms.
6 RAVEN VS. JEAN GREY: RAVEN
They’ve both got telekinetic powers, but Jean Grey’s telepathy is awakening when this version of the team comes around. That’s great, but without the Phoenix Force, if Jean goes into Raven’s mind she’s not going to like what she finds. Jean’s going to get KO’d the second she goes snooping, and if she doesn’t, she can’t keep up with Raven’s soul-self. The only hope Jean has is the Phoenix Force–and since that’s not usually something she can call on at will, she’s got no chance here.
5 AQUALAD VS. KITTY PRYDE: AQUALAD
If we’re talking about Kitty Pryde when she first joined the X-Men, she’s in no condition to face off against Aqualad. He’s got several years worth of experience over her in addition to super strength and the like. If we’re talking about current, awesome pirate Kitty Pryde, that doesn’t get any better. Currently, Aqualad has more experience and he’s a mage now with powerful magic. There’s no scenario in which this plays out with her getting a victory.
4 BEAST BOY VS. WOLVERINE: WOLVERINE
This isn’t even fair. Beast Boy has greater versatility with his powers, but there’s nothing he can transform into that Wolverine isn’t willing to attack without even thinking about it.
Every year Wolverine gets hunted down by Sabertooth and the two of them duke it out to a finish—Garth doesn’t have what it takes to match up to that level of ferocity. At best, he can hope to make Wolverine laugh and then Logan is a bit kinder.
3 STARFIRE VS. STORM: STARFIRE
Storm fans are pretty upset right now, and that’s fair. It’s difficult to figure out who would win in a match like this, but…it’s worth saying that Starfire can survive in the vacuum of space. There’s no rough form of weather Storm can throw at Koriand’r that can’t be shrugged off if that’s the case. Starfire’s got her energy blasts, super strength, and she’s faster than most humans—if she’s not taken out by a tornado then this is probably going to be a quick win.
2 NIGHTWING VS. CYCLOPS: NIGHTWING
This is probably a bit of a surprise choice for some. Cyclops is a superb leader, and one of the best in the Marvel Universe. But Nightwing ain’t from Marvel. He was trained for years to be the next Batman basically, and he maintained his personal connections to gain the trust and respect in the superhero community to lead any team someone could put together. Cyclops has his power, but Nightwing’s used to facing people with powers. Cyclops has fought a ton of talented fighters, but he’d be completely outclassed here. Just one slip up would cost him the fight.
1 WINNER: THE TEEN TITANS
This is a bit surprising. If this battle were constructed differently, then there’d be no question that the X-Men would mop the floor with the Teen Titans. But the Wolfman/Perez era of the Teen Titans were incredibly powerful, while the Claremont X-Men team doesn’t quite have the experience they have in the modern era, while not being the strongest X-Men group ever put together. The two teams are roughly even in that area, which only leaves raw power and technique—the Teen Titans have that in spades, with their members being trained by Wonder Woman, Batman, and other classic heroes.
At one point, there were no two teams bigger than the Teen Titans and the X-Men. But which is the better team?
